It was the best movie I've seen in a theater in a while. But that's probably because I get dragged to every comic book/sci fi movie EVER MADE. I finally put my foot down when the prospect of watching ScarJo use 100% of her brain capacity was imminent. And everyone thanked me for it.
I am excited about eventually seeing this. There have been nothing but raves about it. It's amazing that he shot this over 12 years.
Now, I'm sorry that I have to get into "inside baseball" Oscar stuff, but I just have to. Right now this has to be the frontrunner for Best Pic and Director. Richard Linklater has a lot of goodwill already for the Before Sunrise triology, and he did so much working shooting this over a period of time. It's like Life of Pi and Gravity (previous winners Ang Lee and Alfonso Cuaron) in "degree of difficulty." That's Anne Thompson's idea that the person who is perceived to have put in the most effort sometimes wins.
I have also heard good things about Foxcatcher. Steve Carell, Mark Ruffalo, and director Bennett Miller ("Capote," "Moneyball") could contend.
Again, sorry to bring Oscar into this, but I know insominac and dr. girlfriend read this board and like to compete in the Oscar predictions!
You should also check out Grand Budapest Hotel if you haven't already. I really liked it. I have only seen two 2014 movies so far this year: Grand Budapest Hotel and Monuments Men. I really want to see Gone Girl when it comes out; I loved the book.
I've mainly been getting caught up with last year's movies. When I saw Philomena in early July, that was the last nominee for Best Pic that I hadn't seen.

I plan to. I came close to watching it, but wasn't in a Wes Anderson kind of mood. lol

Yeah, I'm sure that it will get Best Picture and Best Director nods.
Right now, the top Oscar buzz contenders are Boyhood, Unbroken, Foxcatcher, Gone Girl, Inherent Vice, maybe Grand Budapest Hotel.
The top predictions on Gold Derby right now are Amy Adams for Big Eyes, Steve Carell and Mark Ruffalo for Foxcatcher, and Patricia Arquette for Boyhood.
I could see Life Itself getting documentary, Roger Deakins finally winning for Unbroken cinematography, and Boyhood getting pic and director. It's very rare to have such a high score on Metacritic.
My boyfriend and I went to see Boyhood the first night it was open here in DC. We both really liked it, although I think he may have liked it slightly more than me. It was really cool to see the main boy grow up before our eyes. I can see the main character and Patricia Arquette getting award nominations because of this film. Hopefully it won't be forgotten by awards season time since it came out over the summer.
I wouldn't be surprised if they do a re-release in the late fall/early winter actually to put it back on the awards season radar.
Patricia Arquette is listed as #1 on Gold Derby for supporting actress.
However, it'd have to be a slam dunk or a weak year for her to win, I think. The Academy is still snobby enough that they might not want to give it to her if there's some distinguished actress competing against her, esp. a Brit.
(not my personal opinion of Arquette, just what I think they would think)
I can't say enough good things about Boyhood. We finally saw it today and it just resonates with me as either a person you are or those you are close to. A movie that will totally stick with you.

I liked it, but mostly for the concept. I think that, obviously, it was a bit more free-form in terms of plot (almost not a plot at all, just the experiences of a boy growing up), which makes me think, "There IS something to be said for a tightly-written plot." I love Linklater as a writer, but in retrospect, I think a lot of the Before Sunrise trilogy shines because of the chemistry and dialogue between Deply and Hawke, some of which was written by them and some of which may have been improvised (though I believe Linklater was nominated for best original screenplay for Before Sunset, at the very least).
I also thought 2 hours and 40 minutes was a bit long. Mostly because when you shoot 12 summers worth of footage you need to include some stuff from each year. Which kind of frontloaded the movie in a way it otherwise wouldn't have been (because his experiences as a teenager were more interesting).
BUT I did like it. I liked the characters and the actors and the direction and the concept (A LOT). I wasn't totally wowed with Patricia Arquette the way others have been, but looking at her character arc, I can see the appeal for a nomination.
Anyway, I'm rooting for Linklater and Hawke, here, since I'm a fan. I would definitely recommend it to those who think they would enjoy films of this sort.
