Someone come hold my earrings! I shared an article on FB about former Gov. Strickland living on minimum wage for a week and in the ensuing comments, an old friend of mine said, "If you work as a server with no plans to improve your lot in the next 5 or 10 years then you deserve to be struggling"
Apparently people who have low-paying jobs deserve it because they don't have an entrepreneurial spirit.
I live in the South and am surrounded by close-minded Republicans, some of them being my family. I ignore a lot of my news feed.
I've known her since I was 7 years old. She's my sister's best friend and the sister of my childhood best friend and has gotten a lot more conservative over the years. She lives in New England and her rationale is that she managed to work her way to advancement with a minumum wage job.
My mother worked 2-4 jobs while we were kids and they never managed to pull their way up. Granted, some of that was in part because of poor decisions on my parents part, but it was also because they made lousy money.
I shouldn't be surprised, she's a Dave Ramsey cultist.
First, I was not expecting this post title from you.
Second, that comment sucks. Grrrrr
Hah. Well, I sometimes hide the anger well, but things like this make me very, very angry. And she managed to skyrocket from my annoyance to my anger quickly.
Aaand, she just implied I'm a socialist. Good times.
From these kind of people being a socialist is a compliment! I am FB friends with the first boy I ever kissed. He is super conservative and always makes nasty remarks on my super liberal views. He called my a raving feminist and wouldn't stop making negative comments so I made it that he couldn't see my feed. The funny thing is that I have had the same conversations with another long time friend of mine and we can be respectful to each other. I don't mind engaging, but when it starts to get nasty I'm out of there.
I made a fuckload more as a server than as a lawyer. Just sayin'.
"Improve my lot" FAIL.
Agreed! I made more as a server than I did my first several years as an accountant!
Well, fortunately you and bigapple are deserving of respect, because according to this person, anyone who has no ambition to "improve" themselves isn't worthy of her respect.

Yeah, fortunately she's fairly respectful in expressing herself (I don't consider her views resepctful, but she's not being rude). I used to have a FB friend who was really off the beam. She legitimately believed there was still some kind of McCarthy Era communist threat out there.

OMG, I love those people. Those are the ones that call Obama a Nazi and communist. Oh, and don't forget a Muslim.

Yep; she believes it all. She also believes vaccines are immoral and any pro-lifer who gets a vaccine is a hypocrite because it was started with the cells of an aborted fetus.
On one hand, my life is a lot simpler without her on my FB feed; on the other hand, it's a lot more boring.
This is honestly one of the reasons I never wanted to move back to NC after college. As much as I love my family, I'm so much happier living in a blue state. I assume these poor people who aren't ambitious also don't deserve to have kids since daycare isn't affordable...
I actually think much of Dave Ramsey's teaching has a lot of value -- being hyper aware of your finances definitely is better than sticking your head in the sand. Though it still sucks to be poor in this country. I guess I don't know much about any more "cult-like" teachings he may have.
Unfortunately it seems generally pointless to debate people like that, though. To quote my dad, it's not fair to get into a battle of wits with someone who's only half armed.

As a server, that offends me. Although I am working to get through school so it may not apply to my situation. My boss has a bachelors degree in biology and chose to stay in the food business.
We need all kinds of people to keep the world turning.

I agree that his teachings are valuable to people who don't have money management skills. But the hard-line, extremist approach only goes so far. Plus, there seems to be a strong sentiment that debt and hardship somehow indicate a frivolous person who deserves where they are.

I'm always so late to those posts! I hate that they keep implying that raising the minimum wage is a government hand out! If businesses paid their workers a living wage, they wouldn't need to be on welfare so it would save the government money.

Right, if we were all CEOs than some CEOs would have to be servers, some mechanics, and so on.
