We rented a cabin through VRBO for three days. It was not what we expected. The owner, through several emails over the last few weeks, definitely exaggerated the landscape and the nearby amenities. Whatever, we dealt with it, mostly. We did come home a day early; the kids weren't sleeping, it was super hot, and there just wasn't much else to do.
I got an email today from the owner. She claimed there was urine on the futon (it wasn't urine; ds2 spilled some water). She also said that we had spilled coffee "all over the corner of the futon." This is also untrue-- it was on the corner, about a quarter of a cup, and we cleaned it / blotted it as well as we could, without any cleaning agents. When we left, I gve the keys to her husband and told him about both spills. I have no idea what he told her, but I'm assuming nothing. She wants me to pay her an additional $60 to compensate for two extra hours of cleaning (she does the cleaning herself).
I know what I'm inclined to say, but I wanted to hear from ML first.
Tell her that not only will you not be paying extra, but you will be writing a review telling everyone exactly why you will not be renting from her again.

Will you use VRBO again? Is it like AirBNB where you have a rating as well as the host? If so, I'd be inclined to try to negotiate. She did have additional cleaning to do as a result, but $60 seems steep. I'd offer a lesser amount and my apologies.

Water and a dab of coffee? In a liar's den far from promised amenities? I'd apologize for not caring that she spent 3-7 extra minutes going dab dab dab with her magic eraser.

To be fair, if you knew a toddler stayed on your futon and there was now a spot, but the mom assured you it was water, would you give it just a lil dab?

Do we know there was a spot? Sugarbear told the husband owner about the spill.
Either way, that's the price of allowing people in your home. I think cleaning a very small quantity of some questionable fluids is within the realm of normal. It's a futon in a cabin. Not a raw silk covered Louis XIV dining chair.
ETA: I'm super pissed when people lie about amenities. SUPER pissed. The fact that she overinflated the cabin's proximity to stuff also makes me think she's overinflating the alleged "$60" of work to clean it up. I promise I'm an excellent hotel/cabin guest and don't think people should treat property like crap. But people who rent out their property need to be honest.

See, if I were the owner here, I would want to thoroughly clean something like this.
The cleaning is a completely separate issue from her dishonesty about the rental. I would treat those as two separate issues. If you just give her a poor rating, she has ammo to come back and say that you required additional cleaning on her part and that you were being unfair in the rating system because she asked for additional funds, and perhaps try to get the rating removed.

Yes, but she also said she assumed he had told his wife nothing, so for the owner to know there must've been some evidence-visible spot or dampness? I'd say cleaning that and a coffee stain goes above and beyond. Those are hard things to remove. And these sites typically have terms about additional cleaning needed.

I told the husband it was water, but I assume he did NOT tell her, before she cleaned it. She said it had a strong odor, but I'm kind of like, "eff you, lady. It was water." Her email also implied that we left early because I'd these spills.
I agree the instances should be treated separately. If I leave a review at tripadvisor, it would be about the amenities, etc.
