Hi,
My husband accepted a job in Seattle, so we're leaving the DC suburbs (Vienna, VA), and are heading west in two weeks. A few tidbits about me:
-I'm 34, have been married for 8 years, and am a SAHM to three kids (ages 2, 4, and 5)
-My husband has lived in VA his entire life (even during college and grad school), and I have lived most of my life in this area (college in SC)
-We are keeping our home in Vienna and have rented a home in the Wallingford neighborhood of Seattle for two years. We plan to stay in Seattle for 3-5 years, depending on how the job goes
-We are looking for: a gym with childcare, a preschool for our 4 year old, a pediatrician, a dentist, and possibly a playgroup
Has anyone here moved to Seattle from the DC area? Thoughts? Tips? Advice?
I have no recs for you since I don't live near Wallingford, but welcome! I lived in the greater DC area (Columbia, MD and Springfield, VA) for about a year, off and on, since I did a co-op there during college. If I remember Vienna correctly it's a lot more suburban than Wallingford but hopefully you know that already. You should be within walking distance of lots of stuff from your rental house. You picked a great time of year to move -- it's been low 80s during the day and mid 60s at night, without the east coast humidity. There are tons of awesome outdoor things to do in this area. A lot less free museums than you're likely used to being close to DC, but the ones we have are generally pretty good. Hopefully someone else can chime in with a recommendation or two for the things you're looking for.
Hi! I also don't live near Wallingford, so can't give recs, just saying welcome! We have a lot of kiddos on this board aged 1-3, so stick around for gtgs. Many of us have become friends through here. Closer to your area would be spunbutterflyniqstretchad (I think?).
If you PM me your email address, I can see if I can get you added to the Ballard Mom's List. Or at least get contact to see if there's a similar Wallingford Parent's List. I know there's a Green Lake one that niq is on.
I'm actually 0.2 miles too far away to qualify for greenlakemoms . OP, depending on where you are in Wallingford, you might be close enough.
Olympic Athletic Club is probably the best bet for a gym with child care in that area. It's not cheap, but it's not expensive. You could drive to 24 Hour in/near Northgate to save a few bucks. My ex-GF goes there and leaves her kid in childcare.
We're at Ballard Pediatrics, but if you are looking for a practice closer to your home, there are probably closer options. We still haven't found a dentist; babyniq only has 2 teeth, msniq just goes to UW school of denistry (she works there) and I haven't been to a ... HEY, WHAT'S THAT OVER THERE?
I moved from Atlanta GA. It took me a long time to adjust. But I was living in a neighborhood that didn't have many people my age, and didn't have much to do. I think having a kid and finding activities and other families will help in your situation. Good luck!

Welcome! Im down in the dirty south so the only recommendation I have is the y for a gym with daycare but I am biased towards that organization so you know
I don't live in that area, but I lived in DC for three years and my H grew up in Alexandria. His take on moving here was that area is very friendly and nice, but he has always complained about the weather. I, however, prefer the weather here.
