I rarely buy pre-processed fruits or vegetables. The markup is ridiculous when I can just as easily chop whatever it is myself.
However, I bought a 20-ounce package of cubed butternut squash from Trader Joe's on Saturday (May 12th). The "Use by" date is today (May 15th). I took it out of the fridge to steam it (I bought it to make squash puree for my son), and it's already mushy, fuzzy and moldy.
I'd take it back, but I am without a car (S.O. has been taking mine to work, since he damaged his last weekend hydroplaning into a guardrail), and also, I don't have the receipt anymore to prove when I bought it.

I'd be pissed too.
I would definitely take it back (if you can) -- even without the receipt. As long as it was obviously purchased at Trader Joes (I'm assuming the sell by sticker has their name on it?), then if it's moldy before the use by date, they should replace it for you.

Yeah, it's obviously from TJ's. It's a plastic "bowl," wrapped in plastic shrinkwrap with a Trader Joe's cardboard band around it.
I called the store and they said the next time I come in, they will refund my money or replace the package for free, no receipt needed.
This is one of the things I love about TJs. They'll replace or refund any purchase even without a receipt...it doesn't even have to go bad, if you tried something new and just didn't like it they'll give you your money back!
