We fly to Canada on Friday on a flight that is eligible for both pre-check and Global Entry (in both directions). Problem being that despite me telling my husband to add his KTN to all of his airline accounts as soon as he got the number, he didn't add it to United. I added it this morning.
Will this be too short notice for us to take advantage of pre? Of Global Entry? Why are men so inept at managing their lives?

You're fine for global entry
For precheck you need to make sure his number is added to his personal info for the actual reservation itself, not just the united profile. Given that he made the flight res before the number was in his united profile he will likely have to add it manually to this res since precheck is determined when checking in for specific flights.

You are definitely fine for Global Entry. You actually don't need to input your traveler number to take advantage of Global Entry since it is tied to your passport, picture, and fingerprints that you gave at the interview.
For precheck, I think you can still put the number in up until the time you check in. Also at some airports they let non-pre check people go through the precheck line if the queue gets long.
I haven't tried it, but if you have your GE card, you can probably get TSA Pre-Check by showing the card even if it doesn't show on your boarding pass (assuming your boarding pass doesn't get the unlucky SSSSSS for secondary screening).
