DH and I absolutely stumped on what to name baby Toutsuite. We know that we would like to incorporate at least one of the two names below though we are up in the air whether it will be for the first or middle name. Both names have family significance, hence the desire to include at least one (but maybe both?) in some way. That said, the names are completely opposite styles with one being more traditional and common while the other is not. Thoughts GotP?

I love Riley on a boy (spelled this way) but it became so trendy for girls. Ryland just doesn't do it for me. Joseph is a classic that will always work!
There is minor celebrity here in the UK called Ryland. I cringe every time I see him or hear him so that has affected my opinion. I do like Joseph though.
I agree with PPs...when I first saw the names and the option to maybe combine, I thought Joseph Ryland went really well together. And like AutumnRose25 said, JR is a nice short nickname.

Thanks ladies! Honestly, we hadn't even thought swapping the two with Joseph first b/c DH has been fine with Joseph as a m/n but was not thrilled with it as a f/n. I am team Joseph whereas DH is team Ryland. Ryland was a last name of a family member on DH's side and Joseph was the f/n of a family member on my side. I am not usually a big fan of last names for first names, but I do really like the name Reilly which is what I would have called DS if we had chosen on Ryland for a f/n. The first name of the person associated with Ryland would not have been an option. What bothered me with Reilley was the popularity it gained with girls recently. Le sigh - if only picking out names were easy! Looks like at the very least we will be going with Joseph in some capacity...Now if only I can get DH on board with using it as a f/n....
See, Reilly doesn't seem like a nickname for Ryland to me. The spelling, the fact that it's not shorter ...
Would either of you be up for just using it as a name? I think it's still great for a boy, even though it is being used for girls too.
Honestly, I think I may be forcing Ryland to "work" just because I like the name Reilly. I also feel guilty that we would be including the name of one of my relatives who was important to us, while leaving out DH's family. DH and I weren't thrilled about the popularity Reilly has seen recently with girls, but there does seem to be a fair number of boys with this name too. I don't think it will be phased out as a boys name any time soon that makes me feel a bit better. I guess we could always say that we used "Reilly" to honor DH's family member even if it isn't an exact match and/or nn for "Ryland." I realize I am probably way over-thinking this.
AutumnRose25 - Thank you for your suggestion too - I presented it to DH and he actually liked the "JR" nickname which is a huge step for us. Now we just need to pull the trigger and make a decision.

I also really like Joseph Ryland. I have a nephew, Joseph (Joey). Also, you could still call him Reilly if you wanted, but his formal name would be more traditional. Just a thought.

You definitely could name him Joesph Ryland and still call him Reilly. Lots of people go by their middle names or nicknames! Plus he'll have lots of options when he's older.
My husband goes by his shortened name professionally, but me and the rest of the family call him by his first full name. And of course he has a nickname he goes by with his fraternity brothers. He actually likes the different options.
