Is this a yay or nay for most people. I currently have one but only because I had an extra one when we moved. I'm redoing it and deciding if I need one. We have wood floors.
I have hardwood floors and don't currently have a rug in the DR, but I would like one eventually. I'll probably go with an indoor/outdoor rug in a darker color so that little stains are not obvious.
I can go either way, but I only like a rug in dining rooms if they are big enough to move the chairs in and out without getting stuck on it, and even then, the pattern has to really make sense in the space to me.
We have one, but it's a natural rug so there is no pattern and not a bold, standout type of thing. If we have kids, I'd actually probably roll it up and put it away until they were older and less prone to messes.
I have no rug in the dining room and find it much easier to sweep/mop that way. I do have a rug under the kitchen table because my dog dribbles water all over, and the floor gets really slippery. My biggest problem with the rug is that the chair legs get stuck on it all the time, but I needed a rug quickly and so this is what I have for now. In general I like dining spaces better without a rug. You can put a nice runner on the table to add some contrast/color, if that's what you're after.
We do. The dining room is pretty large with hardwoods and the room looks bare/strange with no rug (also -random - there is a hole about the size of a silver dollar in the floor under the table where the old servants bell was, and many a Lego was lost to it's depths prior to the rug).
I have a 7 year old and 2 year old so obviously they are horribly messy eaters. We just got one of those stain resistant fake oriental rugs from Costco. It was $250 for an 8x12 rug that actually looks pretty nice, but we won't mind replacing in a few years.
I have kids. So a giant nay from me. They spill food on the floor, every time they eat. Which is like 15 times a day. A rug would be a nightmare.
I'm here. I have one in my LR and playroom and while I love them...that's enough upkeep with 2 kids. They leave a trail wherever they go and there's rarely food involved in those rooms.
I don't even want to think about it in my DR...ha.
I'm in the kids = no DR rug category. But I love the look if they are properly sized. For me, this is in the 'when we can have nice things' category of stuff to buy.
I have kids and have wood floors and have a rug underneath. It is a busy floral pattern.. the food blends right in lol. I like having a rug under the dining table I think it looks nice and I like feeling it on my feet when I am sitting at the table. I have always had a rug under my dining tables. It really doesn't take much extra cleaning. I use a little vacuum to sweep up under the table no problems.
We have a formal dining room and I'll probably put a rug in there once we have wood floors put in. We had wood floors + rug in our old house and it was great. I would not ever put a rug under our kitchen table (the one my daughter eats at). WAY too much mess.
We have one, and I like it. We also have three small boys, but we have a large eat in kitchen and generally eat meals there rather than in the dining room. When we are eating in the dining room, I put a plastic mat under my youngest's high chair. Our dining room rug actually takes less of a beating than any of our other rugs because it's the one room the kids don't hang out in that much.
We actually have a rug under our main table especially because our kids are messy. Our floors have large planks with crevices, and I got tired of worrying about all of the milk, crumbs, etc gathering in those crevices. It's an indoor/outdoor rug with a pattern, and it cleans up well. The space looks so much better with a rug.
I actually just got one yesterday. Our new dining room is hardwood and high ceilings, and I think it really needs a rug to finish the room. We went with a dark gray-on gray pattern that I think will hide stains well. In our old house we had a busy oriental rug that also hid stains. I wouldn't get a light colored, plush, or expensive rug for the dining room. I found ours on Overstock for about 200 bucks, so if we need to replace it in a few years no big deal.
