I just came home from a trip to the LBS, where I just ordered a new bike! Yay! But no sexy lightweight carbon fiber here. This one is another animal entirely:
Meet my new commuter! Name TBD.
I live 8 miles from my office (with some hills), 4 miles from the Y where I swim, 3 miles from my LBS and the grocery store, etc., 3 miles to the library and coffee shop, etc. And I drive my car to all those places, because I'm not willing to put a lock on my carbon frame road bike, plus the whole spandex and bike shoes thing. This is my answer to that.
She is steel and super smooth, with big ole fattie tires. I bought a fender, a rack, and only one bottle cage which they'll put on when they build it. For pedals I got SPD on one side, flat on the other so I can use the MTB shoes I already have (and used to use with my road bike), or I can use the other side of the pedals and jump on it in sneakers.
What color bar tape should I put on? That is the one thing they're going to hold off on until I see her. I haven't seen the purple in person yet. I am super excited. The ride of the steel was unreal.
In other news, I went to this shop because they're a Surly dealer, but what did I find dangling from the ceiling (they are also a Trek dealer)? Um, this in an XS:
So obviously I rode it. It was actually the first time I'd ridden a tri bike outside, not on a trainer. WHEEEE. SO FUN. ZOMG. Now that the 2015's came out, it's 2 model years old. It hasn't moved yet at $1799 (original price: $2599) so they're about to list it on ebay to try to finally sell it. The listing was supposed to go live today, but they said they'll hold it a couple days if I'd like. The guy mentioned to Calvin while I was out riding it that they may be able to do a little better on price for a local buyer. Bikes, man. They wiggle into my heart like puppies.

Also, that was how I found my tri bike too. I was at the LBS with my XH, looking for a bike for him, and they just HAPPENED to have a XS tri bike that was perfect for me.
That purple Surley is making my heart do flips! It could be a commuter....or a cyclocross bike...or a gravel grinder....or a back up road bike...or so many things! I am jealous! I MUST.HAVE.ALL.THE.BIKES! She's soooo pretty! When are we going for a cyclocross ride???
Let us know what you decide about the Trek! Did it fit??
Fun, fun. Love! I have a steel frame hybrid bike (with not much to compare it too), but it's pretty light & smooth compared to the bikes I remember as a kid.
Ooooohhhh. Both are pretty!!! When are you deciding about the Trek?
I rode it Sat, and the shop is closed Sun/Mon for Labor Day. So no need to decide sooner than Tues. I'm currently leaning toward yes! End of the season feels like a good time actually, because I will want to log some serious miles on it before racing on it. Handling will take some getting used to, plus it takes a lot more core strength than a road bike.

I maybe kinda thought about the fact that the Surly would give me a chance to try cyclocross at some point it looks so fun! I wish we were closer, I would totally take you up on it.
The Trek fit well - was not planning on 2 new bikes in the same month! But might go for it anyway. As Calvin said last night on the topic, we only pass this way but once, bikes are healthy and fun, and all it really means is replacing the family room couch will have to wait a little longer. No biggie.

Pffffftt....the couch can wait! Do that this winter. You still have a few months to ride your pretty new bikes. Do not think....just get the Trek if you can talk them down to a price that's right and it fits.
