We have a prescription for Zantac. Maybe now the non stop screaming will calm down.
I'm more concerned because he has not gained enough to get back to his birthweight and he will be 3 weeks old tomorrow. He was born at 9 pounds, 1 oz and should have gotten back to that by the two week mark. He was 8 pounds, 10 oz today.
I feel fucking defeated. This kid does nothing but nurse, all day, every day. Its so much harder than it was with Shane and it sucks to know its not even doing anything. I know my supply is fine because I pump to give him bottles at night and there is a decent amount of milk from each session.. I don't know why he isn't gaining, but it's really upsetting me. Pediatrician is going to wait one more week before supplementing with formula. She doesn't think it will make a difference since I'm able to pump a decent amount and he's still not gaining.
I think I'm going to drink tonight. Heavily. After I pump, of course. :-p
DS ate ALL.DAMN.DAY. He wound up in the hospital at 6 weeks for IV reflux meds. Tryto lengthen the time between feedings, working up to 2 hours at least. He is feeding to sooth the reflux, not because he is hungry. We created a vicious cycle, he ate to sooth, then eating caused him to reflux, then he ate to sooth, and so on. He literally would scream every second he wasn't eating and would pass out for about 15 mins. We probably stayed an extra day or two in the hospital to get him stretched to 2 hour feedings. It was more for me than him. Knowing he was in the hospital made me feel like I wasn't a monster for not feeding my kid. It's just isn't what most moms have to deal with and there was a lot of guilt on my part.
A few tricks we did to lengthen the time between feedings, white noise-he liked to bathroom fan. Also get a cup of sugar water and dip the paci in it, DS hated the paci but the sugar water helps with pain at that young of an age. you can use it non-stop.
Push for a pedi GI, push hard and until you get it. We made tremendous stides in two weeks with the GI. Our pedi worked with us for 5 weeks and kept upping his dosage, at a certain point she told us that if the dosage doesn't work you need a specialist. She was amazing in being able to let go and let someone who specializes take over. Unfortunately I have heard far to often that most pedis won't do this.
Hang in there, it is so hard and you feel so helpless.
ETA: sorry for all the typos and misspelled words. Too many to go back and correct from an ipad!

Don't feel defeated, reflux sucks and I second the suggestion for going right to a pediatric GI. They tried Jackson on three medications before finding the winner for us, Prevacid. Zantac and the other one they had him try just made him projectile vomit even more but the pedi wasn't as aggressive about switching things up so he could keep his food down.
Is he sleeping elevated? The rock n play seriously saved our lives with the reflux.

Did they do the baby screening for Galactosemia for him? I think it is state mandated in most states, but I am not sure.
Hang in there. As others have said, you're doing everhng right. Henry ate around the clock, and was a very slow gainer. He didn't gain anything between weeks 3 and 4. I think he was 3 weeks before he surpassed his birth weight.
Cotner- Thank you! My insurance doesn't require referrals, so if the zantac doesn't work, I will look for a pediatric GI for him. I did try the pacifier/sugar water thing, but he hates the pacifier and keeps spitting it out.
Peachy- Is the prevacid minty or bitter? I think the zantac is working, but the hardest part is getting it in him. He spits it out, and if I mix it with BM, he refuses the bottle. I've tasted it and that shit is nasty! He is sleeping elevated in his bouncy seat and I'm contemplating a nap nanny.
Frkls, thanks for the hold trick! I walked around the house with him like that for a bit this morning and he seemed content. :-)
Cleo- Yes, he was screened in the hospital and all of his blood tests were normal. I guess I'll just have to wait until his next appointment and see where we go from there.
hi- k was on the zantac and later prevacid. anyway i did two things. I would give her a bottle and she is sucking away quickly pull the nipple out and slip in the medicine while she has a strong suck going. another thing I would do is put in and then close her mouth so she had to swallow.
Hey just wanted to chime in - we did Zantac 1st and it didn't do much for us but prevacid was amazing! So don't feel defeated if the 1st meds don't work!

This was a huge part of our problem with zantac too - the prevacid he took like it was candy ...
Prevacid works better for most LOs. Also have the pharm flavor it. If you use Walgreens ask for a stamp card, I think you get the 5th or 10th free. We used the hell out of that. You can even take the open bottle you have and they will flavor it.
I'd give the Prevacid a week and start an elimination diet. All beef by products first, milk and meat. A study found that bovine products are a large part of colic. Don't let anyone pressure you into stopping BF, you will know when it is time. There are still a lot of options before you need to decide if that is best for him and you.
I overheard the pedi GI in the hospital tell a nurse he was the worst she'd seen in a long time. And to give you some hope on the low weight, she had to cut his cereal in half at 6 months. She told me she was amazed comparing him to 6 weeks old and at 6 months she had to put him on a diet .
Feel free to pm me. I know what your going through.
