I use this thing and I swear by it. It has an 80 grit side and then a softer side. I think it works better when my feet are dry. It seems to get a lot more skin off. I've tried product after product and nothing really works. I use my file about once a week and it keeps my heels really smooth.
This method really works. I get much better results at home than when I go to those slackers at the pedicure place. LOL
1. soak your feet for at least 5 minutes in comfortably hot water. Not burning hot, but really nice and warm. Sprinkle about 2 tablespoons of this in there before you start soaking
It is from Bath and Body Works
2. You will need this pumice/scrubber from The Body Shop
(don't be fooled by imitation pumice from other stores. Get the Body Shop one, I'm telling you!)
You will need this scrub from Bath and Body Works, it is called, "Toe the Line."
Put a nice dab of the walnut scrub on your heel and bust a move with the scrubber. It is angled so you can work at it to figure out which side scrubs best on each part of your foot. Put another dab of scrub on the pumice scrubber and get the side of your big toe. You will need to work at this scrubbing action for a few minutes using decent pressure. You will be able to feel a BIG difference once one foot is done.
3. When you finish scrubbing both feet, pat them dry and slather on this lotion from The Body Shop
4. Spritz your baby soft feet with this to refresh them
Thank you for the awesome, awesome suggestions. I will modify some of these for the cruelty-free aspect (eyeroll, I know). You rule, and my tootsies and wonky heels thank you.

I like that you are so passionate to your cause.
Or as Veroniker would say passionate.
I don't know if the items I suggested are cruelty free, but honestly, you really don't need a ton of different products. Actually after using the little pumice bar I mentioned, you could slather vegetable shortening on your feet and it would have the same effect without costing $$$.
Use the Body Shop peppermint foot soak and peppermint foot scrub in lieu of the Bath and Body Works stuff. I used to use all Body Shop, but the walnut granules in the Bath and Body scrub really smooth my feet a bit better. You will get very good results with the Body Shop stuff though. It is far superior to anything you would find in a drugstore.
My feet are naturally hideous, but there's a foot file sold at a regional drug store near me (Duane Reade) that I swear by that I've also seen at one or two CVS stores as well- it is pretty much sand paper on a stick. One side is black and it is coarse, the other side is tan and finer. I use it in the shower every day (usually the black side) and once or twice a week, I use it on dry feet and it gets so much gross stuff off of the soles of my feet. It is just sold as the store brand foot file.
Sometimes, if I have the night to myself, I scrub my feet with coarse sea salt and olive oil while drinking a bottle of wine, and my feet are just like a normal person's- I really think it's the bottle of wine that does the trick.
I use it on my feet, as a toner to help curb my oily skin, and I also clean with it sometimes. It's like $3 for a vat of it. I should be paid for promoting it.
I have nothing to contribute except that I was on the escalator behind a woman the other day and I was like "Why is she wearing grey socks with sandals? ...oh. OHHHHHH MY GOD NO."

Don't laugh (ok do, cause I do as well) but DH has taken the circular sander and sandpaper to his feet. His feet are seriously the grossest thing ever and I think he does need to go get a pedicure every time he gets home from the rig. I use the ped egg and whatever extra strength moisturizer we have around with socks.

My mom has a dremel sander specifically for her callouses. She swears by it. I am afraid I would sand a toe off by accident.
Be careful with that razor blade. I took a big gouge out of my heel and could hardly walk for a few days.
The pedicure ladies just hack away all brutally with it, but they must have a lot of practice because when I tried gently cutting off my callouses, it was like a murder scene. No good.
