I don't notice them at all, either.
It wouldn't be too much money. $30 x 365 = 10,950... there are something like 5000 members, so if we could get 1/5 to pony up $10 a year, we'd be in. So, it's not the money.
It just seems like more of a PITA than it's worth. The ads don't seem to bother people, so why get rid of them. It's not like those awful Knot wedding things that make it impossible to read/post.

I think even if we could raise that much money there are so many better things we could spend it on. It's seems like a waste to go ad free when the ads are as unobtrusive as they are.
The ads don't bother me. If we raised money as a community, I'd rather it go to something more worthwhile than getting rid of the ads, since the overwhelming majority of people don't seem to be bothered by them.
Is there something proboards-y that would benefit the community, not related to the ads?
Oh no, I just meant I would rather see 10k per year donated to some charity than used to get rid of ads on a message board. It just seems excessive. But obviously if going ad free is something the community wants to do then we can.

I think it would be sort of a nightmare logistically to see who has paid and who hasn't. Further the number of users includes alter egos (although there can't be too many)

The ads are very simple and unobtrusive. Now, if they start that shit that TN pulled where an ad pops up when you change a page, I might throw in a few bucks.
Maybe we can take up a collection and donate it to Wikipedia and then ask them to allow us to update The Knot's page in the appropriate manner?
Also I'm just fundamentally opposed to paying for use of websites.
This. And I don't mind the ads at all. If we make it a pay site, we're never going to get newbs.
It wouldn't be a pay site. You could still join for free and anyone can use it for free, but there would be no ads for a year if we collected the money.
