Before anyone flames me, I know the best advice to get is that from DD's pediatrician, which I'll do, but I still want to hear from the mama's here.
DD has a cough. That's it, nothing other than a cough. It's a productive sounding cough. She's had it a little over a week but it doesn't seem to be getting worse. It kicks in mostly in the a.m and the p.m.
I feel like if I take her to the doctor he will say "well if it's bacteria, antibiotics won't do anything. It's probably viral. But I'll give you antibiotics and we'll see if that helps"
I don't want to medicate her just to medicate her. It doesn't seem to bother her or affect her sleep. How long would you let the cough go before taking her in?
She has a nebulizor(sp) w/meds from when she had Bronchiolitis a year ago (the meds are not expired) but the cough isn't nearly as bad as that so I don't want to go just nebulizing her for the hell of it.
Grayson has had a runny nose/congestion for about 8 days and started in with a bit of a cough about 4 days ago. L has been pressuring me to take him to the doc, but he hasn't had a fever, isn't lethargic, and hasn't complained of ear pain. I am sure it is a viral cold and I am not taking him for them to tell me it is a cold. So, no, I haven't taken him.
Unless the kids act sick, have a fever for an extended period of time, or complain of ear pain I don't do the doctor. So, I would watch for signs of her not feeling well - otherwise I would assume it is post nasal drip since it is primarily in the morning/evening.
We used Chestal for homeopathic cough medicine in the under 6y set. It is honey based and isn't long lasting (you can give every 2hrs, but is works like a charm.)

I'm like 2brides, we don't go unless he's had a fever for more than a couple of days, or if he seems uncomfortable/out of sorts. We have a chest rub that we'll use on him at night if his cough seems really bad, but we don't use it often.
Henry "has a cough" most of the time. It sounds productive. Actually, now that I honk about it, it's been gone since summer started! Ha! Anyway, I brought him to the pedi before Xmas for it because he had been sick, got better, but the cough lingered. We were getting ready To travel and pneumonia was going around, so I brought him in. His lungs sounded clear and the pedi said "Some kids have pneumonia and barely cough, others [pointed to Henry] sound like they're about to hack up a lung, and theyre fine. He may just be that kind of kid." haha Just a personal anecdote
She's 27 months. We've used the honey cough stuff before so I gave her some of that. Like I said, the cough doesn't seem to bother her and it isn't getting worse so I'm letting it run its course.
