Our beach vacation this year was supposed to be a destination wedding in November at Turks and Caicos. I was looking forward to it, but it was going to be expensive and I would have had to blow off a week's worth of classes. Wedding got canceled, we're not out any money but we are out vacation plans.
In the past, we've gone to Mexico a couple times. We found a small resort outside of Playa del Carmen that was just our speed. As I have mobility issues, a monster resort just is not easy for me to navigate and this one worked well for me. It wasn't hideously expensive (10 days last year in April was about $2500 for us, including airfare). The resort has a very good dive master on site, so my SO went diving while I vegged out at the pool.
I'd like to go someplace different. We'd be looking to go in March rather than November.
My criteria is that it needs to be a small resort, preferably less than 200 rooms. An AI is appreciated, but not necessary. It must have good beach with easy access and good scuba diving. Not horribly expensive, as we are likely going to be going to Scotland in September.
I've wondered about both Costa Rica and Belize, but know little about either of these places. Or I'd be interested in hearing about anyplace else.

I know I just mentioned this to someone else, but a friend just went, so it is high up on my short list - Staniel Cay in the Bahamas (Exuma). They do have AI packages, and the diving there is gorgeous!

mich1 - I know the beaches are gorgeous, white sand, flat because my friend's pics were stunning. They provide little dingys too that you can take to other beach areas. If you look at the map, the bungalows are over the rocky parts, and the beaches are to the left and right. You can see the beaches here:

DH said the scuba diving in Honduras were really good. I'm going to go scuba diving with DH for the first time on our upcoming cruise there. A quick Tripadvisor search showed decent resorts in Roatan and nearby areas.
Turks and Caicos also have really good scuba spots. A bunch of our fellow cruisers were all about scuba's in Grand Turk. Their water is one of the best looking water I've ever been to.
DH was going to scuba outside of Tamarindo in Costa Rica, but he went surfing instead. This resort is $200+\night during the month of March. The good thing is that in CR you can split between Manuel Antonio or La Fortuna as well.
