Well I'm thankful I haven't seen that one. 9/10 of my acquaintances seem to understand fair wages and the reasons why.
I have to say, though. I get really awkward penguin every now and again when I see the spouse of an enlisted member saying how low their pay is and at the same time talking about how officers make all the big bucks. Part of me is like, well, the benefits (BAH!Medical!) are, in my mind much greater than just about any other entry level civilian job and maybe I need to read the pay scales again because I thought that junior officer and upper enlisted had similar income levels. But then DH said that he and his buddy sat down to calculate what type of take home pay his CO and his active duty (officer) spouse are making out here on this island and apparently it was quite a large sum.
I really don't understand the "Us vs. them" mentality that many people seem to have. It makes me sad that we've come to this.
This.
I work at a super low income school, in a very, very low income area. The families I serve have on average 5-10 children. Most are immigrants. They work what jobs they can find. Their older children work to support the family too. They don't complain. They are just happy to have roofs over their heads and food in their bellies. The entitlement that some people believe in drives me bankers.

I am so glad I don't see much of this stuff from the SM's and spouses I have on my facebook. The other political nonsense I was seeing all resulted in defriending or being hidden.
I took the liberty of calculating my hourly rate only because I came in to the Navy knowing I would take a pay cut and this post got me curious. I added $500 to my pay and other benefits to account for Tricare. I calculated as if I work 40 hours a week. I don't I work more and stand a week of 24 hour duty each month. Anyway, it's like $21 an hour. That's not great for me considering I made more per hour as a civilian respiratory therapist and it's actually less cause I work more hours than I calculated but I knew I was taking a pay cut. For someone who doesn't have a degree or is 18-20 years old they're rolling in cash at that pay rate. I don't know where I was going with this but I agree minimum wage is too low. I couldn't have even afforded rent and ramen noodles let alone healthcare on min wage 40 hours a week in 29 and that place wasn't exactly paradise. people don't post about this stuff on my FB. That's surprising considering some of the people only friends list.
I hate this meme too! I always want to post something rude back to it. Especially when the poster is a 20 year old dependent complaining about how her 3-bedroom/2 bath brick home on base isn't big enough because "she has a lot of stuff." WAHHHH.
I literally am paid over double in BAH (D.C. area) than a minimum wage worker makes working full time. ($7.25/hr x 8hrs/day x 22days/month = $1276) whereas (D.C. BAH for E-1 w/o dependents = $1578.)

Somewhere I saw someone complaining that the place housing offered them wasn't big enough for her to run her daycare business. I'm thinking.......entitlement issues much?
Our next door neighbors are dual AD AF. I don't know what their finances look like, obviously, but they are being paid very well. He always says that they have a sweet gig going. And they just had a baby, so now one of them can claim a dependent and pull in a little more for BAH and BAS.
H keeps making jokes about me commissioning. It is tempting, SOMETIMES. lol But I don't want to do OCS. So no thank you.
You'd have to look into what they offer for your particular degree field, but with your master's, you might be able to do COT with the AF or DCC for the Army, neither of which kills your soul or breaks your legs like traditional OCS. beans likely knows better. She's going to COT eventually, but she's also in an insane doctoral program. I think the Army will DCC social workers, so maybe that would be a good option. ETA: I know you're not getting your MSW. You still have to do most of the shitty physical stuff at DCC, but it's not difficult per se. And I'd help you (or anyone here) with the hard stuff like land nav.
I can confirm this in regards to AF COT being nothing like traditional OCS. I went to COT and boy oh boy did I count my blessings every morning when we'd march by the people in traditional OCS. What they did was much similar to basic training, but for a long time - I think it was like 10-12 weeks. I don't really remember anymore how long I was there but I think it was around 4-5 weeks, and I literally had a housekeeper. Yep, a maid came into my room after I left for class and made my bed and cleaned my shower, can you believe that shit?!? I had my cell phone the entire time, a computer in my room, and freedom to pretty much do what I wanted after 5pm. For the first couple weeks I think we had to wear our PT gear to dinner and march, but that was about the extent of the crazy. The hardest part was expecting it to be like basic training and then finding out it wasn't. I kept waiting for it to get miserable.
