I can try and send you some if you want, I've heard from some friends that they get confiscated at the border but I'll send with a few other candies and some maple syrup or something. Lol.

Confiscated? really?
Of all the things brought into the US illegally, the border patrol targets chocolate eggs!!

I'll keep this in mind If I decide to get some.
A few years ago our van was searched and we were heavily questioned about kinder eggs. I think they must have noticed the wrapper in the console when I passed over our passports.
Yup, they sure are, my DD watches youtube videos on them, so I get the obsession.
I don't know how my 3 yr old recently got obsessed with watching them on YouTube. Though I hardly let her. Probably something my oldest came across and she was watching.
She started saying "eggies...your phone" in a little funny voice and she tries to find my phone to sneak off and watch them.

Any German festivals in the area? Perhaps Frankenmuth? I love these and I make a point to get them at Christkindlmart in Chicago. I know I will get the real deal this Christmas though because my sister will bring some back from her upcoming trip to Europe;)

There are some ethic grocery stores in the Chicago area that sell them. (Usually Polish-owned stores)
I honestly didn't know they were "illegal" until a friend said something. I've always brought them back from Europe (and my relatives have, too) and we've never had issues.
I'm pretty sure I would cry/laugh hysterically if border patrol confiscated my Kinder eggs.
I tried bringing home something similar from Australia - choc eggs filled with smarties (think m&ms), stuff like that. Damn customs out a thumb through EVERY one, crushing them. I assume they were checking for smuggling? Who knows. I was so sad when I opened my suitcase, I was going to give them to all my little cousins.
