We have 5mo puppies- Great Pyr/Lab mixes. They're crated during the day unless we're all out (a few times a week, for a few hours at most), they each get a Squirrel Dude stuffed with kibble and capped with a mixture of peanut butter and plain yogurt. They keep them occupied longer than Kongs, and hold up way better than Kongs have (and we only use the extreme black Kongs)! We do Kongs at night because they go more quickly.
Unfortunately, there aren't many toys that are safe to leave with a puppy alone. The hard nylabones are fine, ours definitely get chewed (rough them up on concrete or take a knife to them- some puppies just need them "pre-chewed" to understand them). The bacon flavored branch/stick design seems to be the favorite here.
The Jolly Ball Teaser Ball is one that I'd put out as safe-ish. It really holds up well, our guys LOVE chewing on it- they stick their jaw through a hole and just work away- ours has lasted about 2 months and we've just ordered a replacement (we can get the inner ball out now). So, it definitely is destroyable, but, it takes a long time. We have the 8" and just upgraded to the 10", but, our guys are probably a little bigger than your puppy.
I don't know how much room he has in there, and definitely NO to this if you have any attached neighbors- but, the Jolly Egg is a blast around here.
You can also try wetting and freezing cotton ropes- they're really great for sore gums.
Honestly, though, crates are your best friend. Our boys are both really great about chewing on their designated chew toys, but, there's no way I'd trust them in a little corner by themselves for any period of time- even in a completely bare corner, they'd still be able to chew the gate, the floor, the baseboard or the wall. Not that they'd actually stay behind the gate if we weren't there, anyway- ha!

Yup. Crates are good.
Labs are puppies for a long time. My last lab was crated for three years before he could have free roam of the house.
Dozer gets free roam now but we always pick up all bones and toys before we leave because choking is a real hazard. Maybe a Kong would be ok, but Dozer destroyed his jolly ball in two days.
Lexi is crated and LOVES it. She goes in there just to chill whenever she feels like it.

The hard teaser ball only took 2 days?! We have some other Jolly balls that haven't held up as well, but, wow- Dozer knows how to chew!
