Sorry to ask on here, but no one is on my local board or bump board right now
My son had a 101-102 temperature all day today (he's two and a half). I gave him tylenol and advil throughout the day. His last dose of advil was at 6:30 pm before bed. He's been fussing and crying and not going to sleep, so I went in to check his temperature and he was burning up and has a 103.6 fever. I called our pediatrician and could barely understand him (he sounds like he's talking with a sock in his mouth!). Basically it sounded like he said to continue treating him with tylenol and advil tonight and if I'm worried to take him to the emergency room. Does this sound right? This is only the second time he's had a high fever and it freaks me out. What would you do?
Thanks guys! I checked his temp with a digital ear thermometer at 8:30, so 2 hours after he took the ibuprofen. That's what worried me, but the dr didn't seem to think it was too big of a deal? He seemed ok when I was in his room. He was talking a bit and seemed to be better after I wiped him down with a cold washcloth and gave him some water.
Of course DH isn't at home now and if I take him in I have to bring our 5 month old with This sucks.
My pedi tells me that it's not necessarily the number on the thermometer but how they're acting. If he is sleeping comfortably I'd wait until the a.m. and just check on him every couple of hours. When DS had a 104 degree temp in the middle of the night he woke up screaming. (turned out to be an ear infection).
Kids get crazy high fevers compared to adults. It never fails to freak me out!
Derp: reading comp fail. If he continues to act really uncomfortable and the fever doesn't react to meds, I'd go get him seen.
I would follow the doctor's recommendation and keep to Advil/Tylenol. The recommendation for ER sounds more like a ' cover your ass ' advice. Of course you'd go to the ER if you were nervous. See the doctor in the office tomorrow.
I don't spazz with these things, so take my advice with a grain of salt. It isn't really how high the fever is, it is how fast it got there and how the child is acting. I would make sure he wasn't covered up, take his clothes off, wipe him down if necessary, keep offering fluids, and keep an eye on him. Fevers don't scare me, the crap that comes with them does. If he is breathing, hydrated, not screaming in pain, etc.... I would just wait. How much advil did you give him?
My son has been sick with a fever for the last few days, he's also 2. I gave him Tylenol and lukewarm baths, but his fever went from 101-102 up to 104. I took him in and the doctor suspected strep, they also wanted to check him for an ear infection. I would continue alternating ibuprofen and acetaminophen, lukewarm bath, popsicles or plenty of fluids if he will, and take him in in the morning.
For me it would depend. That's high, but not ER high, IMO. I would treat with tylenol and mortin alternating every 3 hours, the max you can give him by weight. I would also put him in a lukewarm bath. That will help bring it down. My general routine would be that. Call at 104 if it won't respond to treatment, go to the ER at 105.
Of course, that's my kid. I know what they are like with fevers and would be able to tell if something was out of the ordinary. If you are really that worried, take him in.

i would try a different thermometer, first. if you take it under the arm, remember to add a degree.
i would also take him down to just underwear (or diaper) and put a cool washcloth on his forehead and in each arm pit (though not before you take the temp).
i didn't see if you said how long after the ibuprofen you took his temp?
Thanks everyone!! You've made me feel 1000 times better!
I've checked on him twice now and his temperature has been back down to normal and he doesn't feel hot any more (weird that it took so long to kick in). I feel okay now waiting to take him in in the morning. I don't know why fevers freak me out so much.
