We are thinking of doing this from Vegas. Has anyone done this drive in winter? Any recommendations for either or both locations? We enjoy hiking but won't be camping.
We went in May-so I can't offer info for the drive. But its a beautiful drive. We stayed at Red Mountain Resort for a few days and then stayed in Zion Lodge for 2 days.
You'll have a great time! I just got back from Zion and Bryce (and Vegas) last week. Can't give you advice on winter, but it is a pretty drive if you drive through Zion to get to Bryce, through the tunnel.
Stop at Bryce Pines Restaurant on the way into Bryce. They have fabulous soup and pies! I highly recommend the boisenberry pie! Also, Zion Pizza & Noodle Company in Springdale (outside Zion) is really good too.
We stayed in Hurricane, 30 minutes outside Zion, at Comfort Inn. It was ok. Not the nicest or worst Comfort Inn. Cheap though.
Tip for Zion: You can park along the street in Springdale, outside the park, and either walk to the visitor's center or take a shuttle in. Then you don't pay for parking. You can't drive in Zion except 1 or 2 stops in, and if you're staying in the lodge, so unless you stay in the lodge there isn't a point in paying for parking.
My cousin is getting married in Zion next summer. We are planning a trip to Bryce and then going to Vegas for a couple of days after the wedding. Is the trip for Vegas to Zion like 3 hours? I have heard 2, 2 1/2, over 3 . . . I just don't know how long I will be in a car. I know the scenery will be pretty for a good portion of it -- so there is that!
Most of the scenery is just desert... though there is a pass you go through that I found impressive, being from a non mountainous area. It was 2.5 to Zion.
