Track events!
Since I started running a few years ago I've become a big marathon watcher and thus have a subscription to Universal Sports so I can stream it. One of our friend's from Pittsburgh's sister actually ran in the trials in Eugene. I think she ended up 8th so she didn't make the team but a 15(ish) min. 5K is nothing to spit at. I watched all the time trials just to watch her run and it was so cool to "know" someone running them.

I think I'm so used to not having TV that it didn't even occur to me to watch them now that I do. I usually do enjoy the opening ceremony. I'll have to look up when that is. The sports that I identify with most closely are the water sports so water polo. I love diving. Maybe also some track and field.
We're stationed in the UK right now, and it is Olympics MADNESS here:-) We got tickets to see swimming on Sunday morning -- so excited! H used to swim, so he's obviously very excited (even knows a few of the competitors we'll be watching). I personally like watching all of the water sports, gymnastics, and track & field.

Oh wow, that would be so neat to see all this first hand! Lucky girl!

And something I've always wondered...How many hookups do you think occur in the olympic village? I mean, you have some of the worlds most beautiful bodies all in the same area for several weeks. Something's gotta happen, right?

Haha. I would venture to guess that most athletes aren't really enjoying themselves until they're done competing. I will confess that I have a huge girl crush on Kara Goucher. I'd scream like a school girl if I met her.
Did you know that the song "Hey there Delilah" by Plain White Ts was written after a professional marathoner?

I could have sworn I saw something on TV one year about how they ran out of free condoms. Doesn't surprise me much since it's a group of people of a similar age range and common interests who are generally quite busy and probably don't have loads of time for a committed relationship.

Also, how did I forget gymnastics!
I read about that on CE&P the other day, but I think it was early 2000's.
There's going to be 150,000 free condoms offered to athletes this year, about 15 per athlete. It's a new record. If an athlete runs out, they just ask the pharmacist or something for more. Apparently there's a LOT of sex in the Olympic village. One athlete said she saw people doing it out in the open on the grass last time.
That said, I find the free condom aspect the most interesting thing about the Olympics. That's right, I said it, I hate the Olympics. HATE.

This was in Salt Lake City. I lived there at the time (had to move out of my dorm so an Olympian could stay there during the Games--very cool) and this story got a lot of local chuckles/horrified looks. Apparently there were big bowls of condoms EVERYWHERE for the athletes and they still ran out.

"The amount of free condoms being distributed at the games will far outnumber the Bible, however. On the behalf of all England, the Daily Mail boasted that London 2012 could be “the raunchiest games ever,” given the record-high 150,000 condoms being handed out—15 per competitor."
ETA: ::Gigglesnort:: According to that same article, in comparison to the 150,000 free condoms, 4,000 free Bibles will also be made available.
Wait your turn, American! Nobody will come over to my house to watch with me. Either they have to work or it will be past their kids' bedtime. Sad. That'll teach me to invite people over at the last second. Haha.

We will be watching, atleast the Gymnastics! My husband graduated with Jordyn Wieber's sister (Jordyn is 10 years younger than us) and it is a close-knit community so everyone knows everyone.
We were in the town today to have lunch with his parents after my doctor's appt and the town has coined the term "Wieber Fever" and has gone completely over the top with it. It is kind of cute. Their church, the local catholic church, is airing the opening ceremony and each of the Gymnastic portions. Our local NBC is airing a piece about Jordyn right before the opening ceremonies are aired this evening so H has the autotune set, lol.
She trained as a child at the sports complex I worked at in highschool, kind of neat!

You're joking about the condoms, right?
I thought the sluttiness of the olympians was a very very well known thing... I have heard about that for years! hm
Anyway, I always love gymnastics, swimming, running, stuff life that. I will probably catch random things along the way too, since I am not working anymore before I go to school I will have lots of opportunities to watch! Woot!

I'd never heard about it. I was just thinking today and came to an obv conclusion, I guess! It makes complete sense though. I would just think some countries would keep their ladies on lockdown.

I so wish Mr. Amaristella was here to watch this with me. He loves British history so much. I actually wrote him and email with some hints. Does anyone know if there should be an easy to access recording of the opening ceremonies that might be available for a few weeks/months afterward?
BTW,
**Spoiler Alert***
Mr. Bean & the London Symphony Orchestra--hilarious!

Additionally is anybody else being driven up a wall by the American NBC commentators? I won't pretend like I didn't laugh at the Kim Jong Il comment. Just overall I wish I could mute them and listen to what the audience is hearing instead.
Edit: okay I noticed by the letter J things improved a bit. Maybe even different voices as well.
