DS just turned 18 months. My MIL just asked for XMas gift ideas. Magnatiles are the type of thing she would buy. I was going to ask for them next year but do you think he is old enough to use them when he is 21-24 months old?
He loves to play with his megabloks and his small sets of Tegu blocks.

Ugh. I was hoping you would all say he could use them at that age.
I am trying hard to find toys from educational stores that she could get him if not magnatiles. I am having a hard time finding something and she asked us to look at those catalogs. I would tell her to get him a membership to the Children's Museum here but I know she will want something he can open since we will be celebrating at their house, and the other benefit of that is he will have new toys to use there while we are visiting for the few days after.

DS has been crazy about Duplos and the wooden Thomas the Train collection. If anyone asks for ideas around the holidays, I'll throw out trains/track, and another Duplo set. We only have the basic Duplo set, so there aren't many pieces in his collection.

He would probably start using them a but before next Christmas so I don't think it's "wrong" to ask for them now. I'll ditto CloudBee that Duplos could be good, DS got into them a few months ahead of Magnatiles.

maybe I will go the route of asking now and knowing he may not fully use them right away. I do feel that by next Xmas, there will be more educational toys appropriate for him because he will probably be in preschool.
aren't duplos and mega bloks the same thing? he seems pretty content with what we have and I have 100 more I haven't even opened yet so I am hesitant to ask for more of those.
He likes his trains but I bought a ton off Craigslist and we give him a little at a time so he doesn't need any more of that bought for him. My parents are getting him more food for his kitchen set. We got him a tool table and tools for his big gift from us at a consignment sale for $10 brand new so he doesn't really need much else. He has M & D wooden puzzles and some other Vtech learning toys people have given us or I've gotten at consignment sales.
C just turned 2 and I don't think he's ready for them yet. He's sort of ham fisted and I don't think he has the fine motor skills for them yet.
This is probably a better indicator than age. DD1 has always had really good coordination (and a patient dad to help her build, LOL). DD2, not so much. I think she'll like Squishy Circuits better - she likes playdoh and things that she can mash.
DH and I both would enjoy playing with him with the magnatiles. People have commented on his good coordination when eating and picking up little things too, so maybe that is a plus.
