I'm reading And the Mountains Echoed, the newest book by Khalid Hosseini, author of the Kite Runner. It's pretty good but it's taking me a looooong time to read it.
Has anyone else read the latest Stephanie Perkins book? I thought Anna and the French Kiss was cute, the second one OK, and the most recent book made me feel like shaking my cane and yelling "get off my lawn, you dumb kids!"
I read the first two and had similar reactions. I haven't touched the most recent book, but this reminds me that I probably should order it. I'm middle/high school librarian, so I get to justify all my trashy YA reading for professional purposes.
I think it's interesting to see how popular Maze Runner has become with the movie and all. I liked the series, but it got pretty confusing and weird. I thought it was very young YA, as opposed to stuff that has more adult/crossover appeal like John Green's work. My middle school kids are going crazy for it though.
Thank you for linking this! David Sedaris actually recommended it at a reading of his I went to last year and I forgot to add it to my to read list. Thanks!
You're welcome! It's *really* good. It almost reads like a Dystopian novel, because the stuff that really happens in NK is so sad and crazy

I LOVE both of his other books, but this one just wasn't as great for me. I felt like with the different narrators for each chapter, I learned a little about the characters, but not enough about each of them, if that makes sense. It just didn't pull me as much (I do highly recommend A Thousand Splendid Suns if you haven't already read that).
Yes I keep getting lost with the different narrators. I keep wanting to throw in the towel, but I really loved his other two books so I keep trying!
I read Thousand Splendid Suns right after having my first daughter. I ugly cried through that book!!!

I'm reading How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff. It's... different.
That's one of my favorite books! It's dark, but I loved it. Sadly, the movie version was super disappointing.
I'm only about 20% into it so I'm not sure how I feel about it. The writing style is taking a bit to get used to. Good to know about the movie, I will have to skip it

This hasn't been the best year for me. I've only rated two books 5 stars on GoodReads. And both were by the same author, Rainbow Rowell. I recommend anything she writes.
This Is Where I Leave You is really good and I am looking forward to seeing the movie.
I read Eleanor and Park and loved it! I have another (Telephone maybe?) reserved at the library.
Landline! I love all of her books but Fangirl and Attachments were my favorites

I'm reading 11/22/63- Stephen King. It's long and I'm only 15% into it, but I'm enjoying it so far. I recently read A Thousand Splendid Suns-Khalid Hosseini and loved it. I also recently read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and found it really interesting.

I have. Anna and the French Kiss is of course the best. I actually hated the second one. This most recent one made me feel old (do kids really act this way? lol), but I quite liked both Isla and Josh.

I love everything about this thread. I'm always looking for new stuff to read.
I'm really into anything by Beth Gutcheon right now. I also really liked Neil Gaiman's The Ocean at the End of the Lane. I read The House of Silk by Anthony Horowitz recently and it was good. Disturbing, but good. It's a Sherlock Holmes novel. And I bought Sarah Kay's first book of poetry. It's called No Matter the Wreckage. I love it.
I also read Gone Girl not too long ago, however many years late. I hated it. Hated.

I liked Anna and have been waiting on the other two to come in at the library. My holds just came in tonight. I know several people IRL who have read these and everyone seems to love Anna, like Lola, and LOVE Isla.

I finished the Goldfinch a few weeks ago, and I finished book 2 of the A Song of Fire and Ice before that. Now I'm back to book 3 of Fire and Ice Maybe I catch up before GoT starts its next season, but with the speed I'm reading the books, it's doubtful.
I'm reading The Husband's Secret right now. I'm finding it to be great middle of the night nursing material.
I read The Goldfinch earlier this year and loved it. I admit though it took me a couple of months to say that - I feel like it haunted me at first and I just felt devastated by it. Now though I can say I really loved it. I totally agree with a PP though about the Vegas section. That was too long and I didn't love that part and it had me wondering if I could finish. Once through there though I was good.
Also loved Me Before You and The Girl You Left Behind (same author).
Also read recently Ape House by Sara Gruen and really enjoyed it (same author as Water for Elephants which I also really liked). And Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie - beautifully written. And last, for non-fiction, A League of Denial was very interesting.

I'm reading The King's Curse by Phillippa Gregory--not her best work.
Before this in the past month or two I've read:
The Invention of Wings (very good) The Book of Life (good but you have to read the first two in the trilogy) Rules of Civility (mediocre) We Were the Mulvaneys (good but not great) A House in the Sky (Awesome, fascinating)
I am reading "I Am Livia." I'm not loving it, but it's an interesting read.
The last book I couldn't put down was "The Goldfinch," although I will admit that it got a little long in places and the ending was pretty anti-climatic.
Just finished Ender's Game and I thought it was fascinating but I don't know how interested I am in the rest of the series. I've also recently read:
The Space Between Us- someone on here had mentioned it and I thought it was good but sad. Dragonfly in Amber (Outlander book 2) The Handmaid's Tale Patriot Games.
I'm currently reading The Book Thief. I'm only two chapters in but I'm having a hard time getting into the style.
Finally, for all of you Maze Runner readers....we saw the movie this weekend. It was really good but didn't answer a lot of questions. That book is going on my list but I'm disappointed to hear the series goes downhill.
I felt the same way about the style. I actually liked the movie better than the book and I can't put my finger on it. I'm ordinarily very interested in Holocaust-related books, and I enjoyed the story line of The Book Thief, but I just couldn't get into the style.
