Another rec for Barclays. Easy peasy to set up. I've had previous accounts at both Lloyds and Natwest and had less than stellar experiences at both (NatWest was the worst).
We have HSBC and we like it. We have a Premier account and don't pay any fees. Love it. I've had people in other countries use HSBC and say they hated. Go figure.
We don't use it to transfer money back to Canada (use OANDA an online exchange) or to cash foreign checks (the fees are huge and exchange sucks - we send them back to Canada).
See if you qualify for Lloyds offshore account. Not sure what the real name of it is. It's three accounts US, Euros and Sterling and you can transfer funds between the accounts. It's only available to foreigners.
We changed from HSBC, but in retrospect they are the best we have used when it comes to international transfers and living somewhere other than the US.
