I watched a French movie last night called La Rafle. It's about the roundup of foreign born Jews that made up the setting for Sarah's Key.
I am done.
I am so fucking done that I can barely talk about the movie Belle that I watched just before that. Fuck the French. Fuck them in their French fucking faces.
That movie was harder to watch than 12 Years a Slave.
I am iammalcolmx levels of mad. Just hateful all day.
I don't think I sobbed this hard at a movie since Hotel Rwanda.

CHILE!!! I had to watch Django to stop crying about 12 Years. I currently have Belle in my DVD player. The movie you just described would give me legit nightmares. NO LIE I used to have nightmares every single times I saw a movie dealing with that subject. I would always end up in Germany during that time period, and was scared shitless even through I knew I was in a dream. I would get on my knees and pray to God to wake me up.
Do not watch movies where the French, the fucking French, not the Gestapo, not the Nazis, not the SS but the French police round up all of the foreign born Jews because fuck them and then send them into a stadium to hang out for a week or so with little food or water.
I'm used to watching movies where they separate the men from the women and children, the weak from the strong. I am not even playing with some damned movie where they send ALL OF THE PARENTS and older siblings off to the death camps and then leave all of the babies and children alone in some detention camp for 5-10 days with just a passel of nurses and the same fucked up ain't shit French police officers.
That's where I lost it. You're gonna send my babies to die with no one to comfort them? NO YOU ARE NOT! They separated a little boy from his teddy bear and I was so damned invested that my only thought was NO, YOU CAN'T KILL MY BABY WITHOUT ME TO HOLD HIM OR HIS BANKET CORNERS TO MAKE HIM FEEL BETTER?

Yes it is a horrible time in French history. And to add to the horribleness they 'punished' the female collaborateurs (read women who slept with German Soldiers) by shaving their heads after the war. When most people were guilty.

summer remember when we were in Paris and I was like " Uhhhhhh how did all these old ass building survive the war?" and you, H, and my Il's were all like " Cause the French cooperated with Hitler"

But if what LHC said above is correct, then it wouldn't necessarily have been just because the French cooperated. The Czechs didn't want to cooperate but Prague was mostly untouched because Hitler loved Prague (a common love we both share, ugh) and had plans for the city.

The whole time we were there my friend and I kept marveling over how well preserved Prague was. My understanding is that it suffered worse under the communist period than WWII. The extent to which everything has been restored is amazing.
Just to add, I read only the first chapter (I think. It could have been less) of Sarah's Key. I started crying uncontrollably and then made DH take it back to the library right then and there (though, I'm pretty sure he waited until the next day to drop it off on his way to work.)
I fucking hate the French for what they did. I hate them with as much ferocity as I love the Danes for saving nearly ALL of their Jews.

FUCK YOU ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!
NO! You don't take the babies and children from their fucking parents AND their animal lovies! Piece of shit.
You've ruined me. It's because I posted that leech video, isn't it? Dammit, hbc!

Sarah's Key wrecked me. I refuse to see the movie.
I literally cried my face off. I went to look in the mirror and I had wide pale streaks down my face. My mascara was intact, btw. It was the foundation, blush, and bronzer that said FUCK THE FRENCH!

I thought he wanted to preserve Prague as a museum of the extinct Jewish race? I didn't know it was because he lived Prague.
Prague also didn't get touched as much because it wasn't the scene of a lot of fighting. The Nazis didn't have to bombard the city when they rolled in and the Russians liberated the city without having to engage in heavy fighting with the Germans. They also weren't bombed by the Allies.
The vast majority of World War II damage in the European theater was in the West as the Allies pushed from Normandy to Berlin and in the East where the Germans engaged with the Russians and then as the Russians pushed to Berlin. They liberated various places along the way but actual damage to structures happened at battle scenes.
The allies basically picked their way from Normandy along the coast to Berlin, meeting heavy resistance and active battles, complete with tanks and air support along the way in Belgium and the Netherlands.
Poland got fucked up because of how Germany launched their offensives against the Poles. They couldn't just roll in like liberators. Then later, there were Jews who rose up in the ghettos and Germany just blew them the fuck up.

Rwanda places much of the blame for their genocide on the French. Belgium gets first billing on their hate list, but France is a might close second. They also shit talk Hotel Rwanda pretty hard mainly because the dude who ran the Mille Collines was not a good person.

Please to explain. You mean Paul Rusesabagina or someone above him? Because that movie broke me for a good while.

Paul Rusesabagina. Obviously, I'm just repeating what I was told when I was in Rwanda this summer, but it was repeated again and again by multiple people at pretty different places, so I feel like at the very least these are widely held beliefs.
Essentially, everyone said that Hotel Rwanda is not a good representation of what went on largely in part because Hollywood decided they wanted to make Paul a heroic figure. Apparently, he was kind of a shady and wasn't protecting people out of the good of his own heart, he was profiting off of all of it. Today he's part of a party that isn't looked on favorably by many Rwandans because he still wants there to be Tutsi and Hutu and in Rwanda. "We are all Rwandan" is pretty much a mantra there because they do not want that kind of conflict it invites andplusalso the Belgians made up the groups based on the numbers of cows people had in the early 1900's so they don't even feel like particularly Rwandan terms and classifications. That said, there was far less mention of his current politics, most of it was related to his time at the Mille Collins and the fact that everything he did was motivated by greed. They were still more than willing to drive me to the hotel to take pictures and see it. Lives were ultimately saved there, that part happened.
