Dh and I toured a model house yesterday and I really liked the doors. The closet, bathroom, bedroom, and pantry doors were all painted a color (a greenish-gray - there were a lot of earthy tones in the model) rather than being white or a wood stain. I'm sure this isn't a new concept, but I've never seen it in person before, and we were digging it.
Who here has painted interior doors a fun color? Any tips/tricks, or any reasons to be strongly opposed to it?
My parents did green trim and doors in their bedroom in the 80's. When they went to redo it (white), it was miserable work that took a million coats. Probably would've been less of an ordeal if it was doors only.
Our front door is purple on the inside as well as the outside. That is about as daring as I have gotten.
My neighbor painted one of hers dark brown & it looks nice. I'm seriously considering painting all my doors on the first floor dark blue-green or charcoal (leaving trim white). They are white now but the paint shows so much dirt (I have 4 kids) & isn't holding up that great (it's been 3yrs since they were last painted). Growing up in a 1879 house, the woodwork was painted different colors in different rooms.
The house I grew up in had doors all different colors, but the trim in each room was also different in color. Dark sage in the family room, goldenrod in the living room, deep blue in my brother's room, light blue in the master. But it was a house built in 1836, so it really embraced those older more "colonial" colors. Which were, coincidentally, also in style in the 80s. But in a way are coming back again.
Our interior doors are almost black - Benjamin moore wrought iron. I love it! It's not for everyone but it's for me! It also hides diet great with two sticky-fingered kids! My white doors were always fingerprinty and smeared with stuff. These ones are too I guess, but it's invisible until I have time to wash doors!
