You all were nice and honest about my spat with my mom and how ridiculous I was being so I think I'm broken down enough to take baby name criticism. I've wanted to post this for feedback for a long time, but I kinda like the name and I'm scared what you rational, level headed ladies will say.
We are Jewish and tradition is to name the baby after someone who has passed away. Many people choose to do this by just using the first letter of the name as opposed to taking the entire name. We plan to use an "S" my deceased grandmother, Sylvia (my mom's mom for anyone following the mom drama). I really, really like the name Scarlett as does DH. DH's family has a family middle name that we would need to use regardless of which name we pick--Grey. So the name would be Scarlett Grey.
I'd love to hear opinions on the name. We have two issues with it. The first issue--two colors back to back, scarlett and grey. Is that too weird?
Here's the second issue, and perhaps I'm over thinking it. I'm a HUGE fan of my college sports teams and all of our friends know this. My office is decorated in with college sports memorabilia, my phone number has my college name in it, I have a personalized college plate. I mean, when I say I'm into it, I mean I'm really into it. Problem is that my college colors are Scarlett and Gray. Do you think everyone will find the name to be a joke, like we picked the name because of the school colors? Honestly, as big of a fan as I am, it took me a month to realize the connection.
So my first question is whether you like the name, my second question is whether you think the color/color thing and/or the school color issue is weird enough to go a different route?

I like the name, although I'm sure people will comment on the use of two colors for first and middle names. I find the coincidence with your college weird. I think people will link the two, but will it bother you?

I honestly think everyone I know will link the two. The honest truth is that it wasn't intentional, it just kinda happened. I was hoping no one would notice it, but when I've mentioned the name to about 5-6 of my close friends, 2 of them made the connection right away.
I don't think it would bother me, but I do think I may justify it to people by saying we didn't realize the connection until after we picked the name. I can see facebook now...DH posts the birth of the baby with the name and I have tons of comments from people saying I'm a die hard fan of my college. But all of my friends have said they think the connection is kinda cool. I'm not so sure, which is why I'm turning to internet strangers.
I think that nobody should be concerned about anybody's opinions about their babies' names.
I also think you should discover MM Moms above.
I totally missed that! Today is my first day. I finally decided to come to the dark side and leave TN altogether. I just noticed the baby boards about 10 minutes ago and hadn't seen the MM Moms board until now. But I doubt you will lurk there Miso, and I value your opinion.
I like it okay. It's a little goofy but fine. You could add an additional middle name if you wanted--so her name would be Scarlett Anne Grey Smith or whatever.

It's NOT Ohio State. It's UNLV --University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
whew! I was going to be very concerned!! I bet that some people will put it together and think you named her after that. but the colors/school aside I like the names.
It is okay. I think it sounds really trendy and also reminds me of like an X-men character's name. I think Scarlett on its own or Grey with a non-color first name would be fine, but together they sound kind of trendy.
But, as others said, the only opinion that really matters is you and your DH. If you love it, go for it.
I thought was the name was ok until you mentioned your sports team. Ours is also scarlet and there is no way I could use that name and not be heckled by all our friends.
However, I understand how hard it is being restricted with names due to Jewish tradition. We have to use D next time around and I can't think of any D girl names I like.
Eh, the double color thing and the school connection is a little cutesy for my taste, so I would probably choose something else. But I really like the name Scarlett.

As a UNLV grad, I thought the school color was red ...and something else. All I can think of is Rebel Red day. Yes, I had no school spirit. I think it is a really pretty name.
