Last time we went in early September, so not quite the high season, and already a bit chilly.
This time we're considering a trip in mid-March.
From what I'm reading, the weather should be fairly mild, and the days similar to what they were in September. Glowy skies in the evenings, but there will be light during the day.
DS will be turning 2 while we're there, so no glacier climbing this time around. We would get a rental car and do the Blue Lagoon, geysers, waterfalls, eat lots of Icelandic style hot dogs, and I'm sure a few trips to the mall in Reykjavik.
We just want to relax, eat, and breath fresh air, basically.
Most of the major roads in and around Reykjavik are heated with thermal water pipes. We wouldn't be straying far from the city, so I'm not really worried about driving conditions.
Yet all things considered, i keep questioning if we should be going in March. DH is all for it. Paris is also on the table, as it's a city we're very familiar with. (A priority for this trip, as we'll have DS with us.) But we can get a lot more bang for our buck (2 bedroom suite) for less than a single room in Paris that same month.
Is there any reason we should run from this idea?
I love Iceland, and have been wanting to take DS there. We want to schedule a trip somewhere for March, and are SO over beachy locations. This could be a win, because the flight is pretty short in comparison to mainland Europe.
I know a few people who have been in March and they all loved it - plus it is prime Northern Lights season. We talked about going in March over Spring Break but may go in June instead. I would totally choose Iceland over Paris but I love Iceland.

I think it depends on your DS and his tolerance. The golden circle can be a long drive and the things adults like might be boring for him. I haven't taken dd on the circle yet because I just don't think she would enjoy it as much and she is 2.5. I wouldn't say it's a bad idea, but might just not be as exciting for him.
Id suggest if you come to definitely try some local pools in the city. They have slides and stuff! This is my local pool in Kópavogur, just outside of Reykjavík.
I think there are a lot of fun things to do though for sure! Happy to talk some more if you have any questions. It's really a kid friendly city and March isn't a bad time to visit if you're looking for down time and fresh air.
