The past week or so our dogs had been acting strange when we take them out side to potty. Jasper the most (sniffing along fence line, tail between his legs). We figured it was a skunk or maybe a person (we've had some break ins and scammers in our area).
Well - today, I found the source. Jasper was barking at the window (very rare, he does not bark). Here came German Shepherd trotting down our driveway. Clearly had No collar, looks like a stray. This is obviously what has been bothering the dogs.
So - what do I do? I'm a little leery at approaching the dog, since I don't know it's behavior etc. Should I call animal control? Let it do its thing? Try to approach the dog?
First, I would take a picture next time you see him (with a landmark in the picture) to show that he is "at large" (Animal Control told me to do that next time we have a stray so that they can write a citation (since they never get there in time to actually see the dog in our yard). It may not be the same in your area, but you can always just delete the picture.
Second, your options are to call animal control and hope they get there in time to find him (which rarely happens here) OR try to contain him somehow while keeping yourself safe. When I've found friendly dogs, I just shuffle them into our yard or onto our screen porch. If this stray isn't overtly friendly, you could try to lure him into your yard or garage or whatever with food. If you can't do this safely, then just keep calling AC when you see him. Hopefully they can pick him up because it sounds like he likes hanging around your house.
Thanks! I didn't think of luring him into our yard! I don't blame him for liking our home! So many dog smells and I bet he can see the Frisbee and dog toys in our yard and wants to play!
