We currently have Directv, our 2 years is up mid Sept. I'm looking at what our options are. We had cable prior to that and had so many issues with the service - a tech was out almost every other week for several months then we met a Directv rep at Samsclub labor day weekend and signed up.
No issues what so ever except that our promo price $55 mo for the first mo went up to $115 now per mo in the 2nd year. It really does still average out to less than cable (with HD, DVR, 3 HDDVR boxes and 1 standard).
HD service is important as well as DVR and I've gotten used to whole home (record on 1, watch on another).
I would just stick with Directv and sweet-talk them a bit. I have never gotten off the phone with them without getting some type of discount or freebie.

We had Directv for years. This year we switched to Dish. The upside is we got our bill reduced by $15 for a whole year and it includes Blockbuster online movie rentals for a year. The downside is we got it before they rolled out the Hopper so we have two separate dvr's one for downstairs and one for upstairs.
I like the menus better at Directv, it just made more sense. It also would tell you better what is not being recorded because it conflicts with something else. And with Directv we could record 2 shows and watch a 3rd but with Dish we can only record 1 and see 1 show. But with the new Hopper system I believe that has changed.
