Last year I had my Scottish Terrier's teeth cleaned, and they had to remove one of his teeth. He was almost 7 when we had this done. Our vet quoted us between $300 and $500 depending on extractions, but I took him to the office my sister works at in a rural area and it was under $200. But that was with her discount, since she was the vet tech who helped.
I think it was worth it, but since then have brushed his teeth 2 to 3 times per week to try and avoid needing it done again.
If your dog has mild gingivitis, I would definitely have them cleaned.

We brush their teeth regularly to reduce the likelihood they will need their teeth cleaned. All of mine will probably have theirs done before they're ten just to reduce the likelihood they will develop heart problems or infections as they get older. Bad teeth can translate to other very serious health problems and as they enter the senior stage the anesthesia becomes less safe for them. $270 is also a steal!

I was just wondering about this. Our vet recommended it for our dog too (just turned 6) - his teeth are wonderful to me and everyone compliments him (us) on his nice white teeth. I think our vet quoted close to $700 for it, but maybe that was way off. They would put him under and I don't like the thought of that. We declined and haven't ever heard of anyone doing it. My co-worker did just have to get 7 or so of his cat's teeth pulled as they were rotten.
