I am keeping her in there for as long as I can. She'll be 25 months when #2 is born, and I have no plans to buy 2 cribs. I figure I'll keep the baby in my room for 4-5 months anyway.
Real beds scare me because they can roam! (Well, not scare, make me scared for any sleeping in or privacy.)
DS never climbed out. We converted his crib a couple of weeks after he turned 3, when we were pretty sure he would just stay in his room and play if he did get up. It worked out really well.
He climbed out once. I (wrongly) thought if they climbed out once, the crib had to go.
He was supposed to be napping one day, but I could tell he was still awake reading. Suddenly, I heard Elmo say "Who wants to potty?" I KNEW that book was not in his crib! I went upstairs to find him sitting in a pile of books! I asked what happened: I just readin' books, Mommy. I climbed out of my crib!" He was so proud! (And acted like I was dumb for asking, as it was pretty obvious what he was doing!)

DS was 2.5. He tried a couple of times to climb INTO his crib (standing on his Uglywhere Chair), and since we have tile floors, we wanted to convert his crib before he started trying to climb out, and prevent falling injuries.

A baby coming. And my kids are 4 years apart!
DD1 was three and a half when we moved her out of her crib. It was kind of ridiculous how too big for it she was -- when she stood up in it the sides were barely to her waist. But she never tried to climb out.
And she still -- at five! -- will not step one toe out of her bed unless DH or I tells her it's okay. So, if being in a crib forever prevents kids wandering the house in the night, I'm all for it!

We converted the crib to a toddler bed when he was 2y9m. We slowly worked on his big boy bedroom and just officially moved him in there a couple weeks ago. It's a queen bed that we already owned. It was really just that it seemed to be time. It's so much more comfortable putting him to bed now that we can lay next to him to read.
We are moving C because of the baby--I want the transition done before #2 arrives. We are going to start with a twin mattress on the floor probably. He naps on a cot at daycare and has for a year so hopefully that helps.
He'd be fine in there awhile longer (no climbing attempts) but I think he's starting to get uncomfortable, and it'll be warmer for him in winter. He is really interested in pillows and blankets and such lately so I'm going to play that up.
Around 2, he wanted to sleep in the bed. There was a twin in his room since the beginning (for me). We just went with it. He slept no better or worse in the bed vs. crib.
His sister is so good in the crib, I'm hoping it lasts longer.
We did it just because. She's really small but still occasionally got legs in the bars. But mostly I just wanted to. It went fine and she does sleep a little better
I wish I could post the video of DD climbing into, and then out of, her crib this weekend. She has a tutu and a John Deere tractor shirt on. I bet Pottery Barn would love that advertising!
We're going the toddler bed route, since she'll be 2 next month and we don't plan on needing the crib until spring 2016, so we'll get 18 months out of the toddler bed route.

I think we're close. My mom put him in the guest bed last weekend and he napped for an epic 3.5 hours. He's been pointing at the guest room before bed/nap time and whining lately, but it has been bearable. Tonight he flipped out when h put him to bed. Sobbing and screaming, "no daddy. go that way over there. that bed." H ended up sleeping with him because we're so not ready.
We moved her to a bed at 22 months. She was starting to wake up a lot at night and we figured out it was because she was rolling into the sides of the crib and waking herself up. She needed more room! Once we moved her she STTN again.
We kept the angel care monitor on her for another six months so we'd know if she got out of bed. Which she refused to do until she was four lol.
DS is 2.5 and never climbed out. He's 40" tall and could certainly climb out if he wanted to. Like pugz, team sleep sack for lyfe. We are not using the crib for baby #2, we are converting DS's crib to a toddler bed. We're being forced to do that soon b/c he's outgrowing his sleep sack . I suppose I could put a blanket in the crib, but he's almost 3 KWIM. Might as well do bed+blanket transition at the same time, get it over with. Considering he wakes up at LEAST once a night to "help blow nose" (in spite of having a hanky in his crib, which he knows how to use), I foresee many "blankets help!" wake ups in my future.
DD was 2 months shy of 3 when one night she refused to sleep in the crib anymore. I promised her that if she would sleep in there one last night I'd buy her a bed the next day. She did and we bought a mattress the next morning.

DS was perfectly content in his crib at 2.5 yo and I would have left him longer but we wanted the crib for the new baby. We waited until about 2 months before my due date and the transition was fairly easy.
I don't get the toddler bed hate. We moved dd at 22 months and it was a piece of cake.Im glad we did it before we had to. Dd lives climbing into bed and has never gotten out.
It's not always a disaster.
@starry dd can't open door knobs. Im so glad we didn't install levers.
DD2 climbed out (and performed acrobatics on the rails) around ~20mo? She used the converted bed as a trampoline, so we ditched it after a couple weeks and put a full mattress on the floor (she was a faller-outer) for her 2nd bday. She's ready for a bed frame, we just haven't gotten it yet.
DD1 never tried to climb out. We took the front panel off at 2.25yrs and upgraded to a full-size regular bed on her 3rd bday.
He climbed out one too many times just before he turned 2. We converted the crib to a toddler bed then. I have no idea when we'll switch to a twin bed.

We moved A around her third birthday, because M was 6 months old and needed the crib. She was happy in the crib, and I would stick her in there with books for rest/nap. She never climbed out, she could climb in but never figured out how to get out.
M climbed out for the first time at 9 months. We lowered it some. He climbed out again at 12 months. We lowered it again. He climbed out at 17 months and despite all of my best efforts I was never able to stop him and he moved to a toddler bed at 18 months.
