I'll try and give the short version:
Monday we went apartment hunting in DC all day, it came down to 2 places, one of which was a little too expensive even if we went to our max budget. Tues morning I called the company about it to see if they could come down to our price. Lots of back and forth and finally got it to $20 over our budget which we can live with. Yay!
The apt is in DC proper in the Cathedral Heights neighborhood which we both liked the best (also looked in Cleveland Park, Woodley Park, Glover Park, and one place in Foggy Bottom) It's an old building as most are BUT they are completely renovating the individual units right now and so it's going to have a brand new kitchen with granite, SS appliances, a dishwasher (yay!!), brand new bathroom, and brand new washer and dryer in the unit (so thrilled about this!) It's on the 4th (top) floor and is a corner unit so we will have windows on 2 sides, a skylight in the kitchen, and a fireplace in the living room. We are thrilled! We knew we'd have to compromise on something and with this unit there really isn't anything we're giving up other than it's slightly more than we really wanted to pay (we conceded a 2nd bedroom/den/loft when we decided to look in DC and not Va/Md). Compared to the other apartments we saw (and we looked at 10? 11? a lot) it's definitely the best deal for the price.
It's right around the corner from a main road that has shopping, restaurants, etc. and there is a bus stop right on the corner where DH can get a bus to work and then walk which will make his commute only about 30 min.
They are currently renovating it right now so it's not going to be ready until a week after we really need to move in, so we're working on seeing if we can stay in the temporary university housing an extra week. If not, I guess we'll be looking for an extended stay hotel outside of the city for the week.
Tuesday morning while I was in the midst of multiple phone calls with the apartment company, I got a call about a job I had applied to at a local university! I have a phone interview tomorrow morning. It would be really close to where we are living so FX!
We came back to NJ yesterday and we will be here until Sat or Sun, not sure exactly when we go back to DC since we are still waiting on concrete housing info from the university. So we'll be in DC for 2 weeks and then have to come back here to get all of our stuff to move into the apt.
The apartment sounds fabulous! So glad you found something you both love! Good luck with the phone interview! Hooray for everything falling exactly into place

This is such a fabulous update! Your apartment sounds like the perfect fit! We actually had to do the hotel thing for about 10 days when we first relocated. It's not the worst thing ever. On the bright side, it was the only time I've ever had a daily housekeeper!
What wonderful news all around. I am shocked and impressed by everything your apartment will have for your price range. Especially the in-unit laundry. That's a rare gem in DC. How wonderful!
Good luck on the interview!!
P.S. What do you think of the area? Are you excited to move there?
We're very excited! We're really looking forward to having so much to do, lots of new places to eat and shop and explore, lots of good public transportation options, stuff like that. We're going to get basketball season tickets for DH's school so we're looking forward to that (built in date night!)
Oh, and to be fair, we did up our budget from what I originally said so it's probably not as good of a deal as it sounds, haha. But it really is considering everything else we looked at was in a similar price range and did not have anywhere near the stuff we are getting. I am so, so happy about the in unit laundry.
