I'm coming down with my family this weekend to watch my sister run her first Marine Corps Marathon. I'll be with, DH, our kids and my parents.
I've got grand dreams of going to the start, heading over to the Lincoln memorial and then to the Iwo Jima memorial. Is this unrealistic, especially with my mom, who moves fairly slowly, and two small kids?
If I do it, what are the best ways to get to the metro from one place to the other? I'm guessing walk from the start to the memorial, then walk to the metro to get to Iwo Jima?
If your mom and kids move slowly I'd skip the Lincoln memorial and watch from the mall, google tells me it is ~ 1.5 miles to the memorial. You can take Metro to the Smithsonian and then take it back to Rosslyn, near the finish. If you timed it right you could see your sister 2x at the mall and then head back to Imo Jima.

Does anyone know where you are allowed to walk along the route? Can we walk on the sidewalk over Memorial Bridge? Or along 110 during the last mile or two? My ideal route would be Arlington Metro, over the bridge to Lincoln, back across the bridge and up 110.

Yes, you can walk over the bridge and on 110. Those are a couple of the hardest parts of the race IMO, so if you can be out there cheering, that's awesome.
I've spectated the last 3 years, and the best spots are the corner of the Kennedy Center (can't remember the mile marker) and the Pentagon (mile 24). These are both key landmarks that will make it easier for your runner and you to spot each other. You can walk from Foggy Bottom metro (go to Whole Foods if you want a bathroom and something to eat!), take the Blue Line to the Pentagon and then take the Blue Line to Rosslyn at the finish area. I tried to do 3 spots one year, but it didn't work. Honestly, I would avoid the finish line area. It is so crowded that it is very difficult to see your runner, plus the Iwo Jima memorial is restricted to runners only. And yes, you can walk along 110. I met a friend at mile 24 at the Pentagon last year and went the last 2 miles with him.
