Some basic googling tells me that it is possible to sign up for an HSA outside of the employer, but I wasn't able to find a site to actually do that. If you have a non-employer sponsored HSA, who do you use? How does it work out?
We have a $6,000 deductible that applies to everything except well child visits, and no HSA. My son has seen 2 specialists and been hospitalized just in the last 6 weeks. Someone hold me.

You can set one up at most banks. H's is just at a local bank.
On your tax return, you'll take the amount you put in this tax year as an adjustment on the first page of your 1040. It will reduce your AGI by the amount of your contribution, which will in turn reduce your tax liability. So you won't see the benefit up front, but rather when you file your tax return.
And make sure to keep all of your medical receipts!

That is great news! I thought I was going to have to jump through a bunch of hoops with a new company, but it sounds much simpler than that. I'll start with my bank.
