I want something that will last awhile, she can grow into, can be passed down etc. I don't want anything Little People, too plastic-y or the like. I also don't want spend $500.00 on a precise/scale model/delicate/heirloom/handmade one.
Recs?
There's one from Lakeshore I can get with my work account and some coupons, and I know it'll be quality but it seems really "schoolish" to me so I'm not sure.
She's usually fairly gentle with stuff and does fine with smaller pieces so I'm okay with that part. She's a bit over 3 if you need an age range.
DD got a kidkraft one (savannah) for Christmas last year and I think it's great. It's large, big enough to play with Barbie sized dolls, but she loves it. It's kept in her room away from her brothers and while they're napping, she plays with her dollhouse. And I get a moment to myself .
There are several styles and some will go on super sale around Black Friday. I picked one that kind of goes with her bedroom furniture since I knew that's where we planned to keep it. I've seen them at Sam's and I'm pretty sure Costco carries them around Christmas as well.
It's sturdy -- DD1 was 2.5 when we got it, and she has never had problems with it. We got fairly sturdy wooden furniture to go in it, not the delicate stuff you find at craft stores. I think most of our furniture is Hape and Plan. We have a wooden family from PBK as well as a Calico Critters set.
Our plan is to one day paint it and decorate the inside (paint, flooring, etc.). We've had it almost three years and haven't done any of that yet. Maybe some day :-)
ETA: You'll need to decide whether you want the small traditional dollhouse size or the larger Barbie size. I chose the smaller size because my DD1 prefers smaller dolls to the Barbie sized.
DD1 is getting this one for Christmas. MIL bought it a few mos ago and says that it's amazing. The architecture student in me liked that you could change the actual house around, not just the furniture.

We went with a Loving Family doll house, which we love and has taken a lot of abuse. In hindsight though, I think I would have bought a wooden dollhouse and filled it with both wooden and plastic furniture. My kids never really liked the wooden people so I would have still bought the family sets from Loving Family.
Ours probably isn't what you would consider a dollhouse, but we have a "firehouse" dollhouse. All the kids tend to love it when they come over (but I think that's most dollhouses anyways).
I ended up getting the pbk dollhouse second hand. I still need a few more furniture pieces, but don't plan on giving it to the girls until they are 3 or so.
I'm really happy we got this one for DD last year. (Except I caught it on Amazon for about $80.) She plays with it a lot. And I figure it will grow with her. When I was younger I could see myself wanting to decorate it by painting, wallpapering and carpeting it. It doesn't come with furniture but we told family members we were getting it and they all got little furniture sets.
I have a kidkraft wooden dollhouse, it is not heirloom quality. I know it's plastic but honestly if we didn't already have 4 dollhouses, I'd totally get a Playmobil one. Those toys are timeless, you can add on endlessly, it appeals to kids 4-10+ (my 10yr old still loves Playmobil & for younger kids I'd just hold back the tiny pieces for when they are older). It's expensive but the actual house/mansion isn't bad & you can add in rooms, characters, accessories over the years. Bonus is it is very gender neutral (or can be at least).
I am going to wait until black friday to see if I can get a better deal. I like that it comes with all the furniture pictured....just need dolls!
We got DD this one last year. She loves it and plays with it every day. Keep an eye out at Target soon -- last year, they had a $10 off $75 toy coupon pre-Black Friday (I think it was early November), so I got it there for under $70, I believe.
