SIL is in my kitchen messing up the sweet potatoes! She went and mixed regular potatoes in the pot, too, talking about making mashed potatoes! WE WERE EATING SWEET POTATO CASSEROLE! Get out of my kitchen.
Now I can't look at that simmering pot without getting upset. And DDs face when she sees there is no sweet potato casserole.....smh
This is a southern tragedy! This is why I always have back-up desserts for family functions. Maybe it will taste wonderful...vanilla extract and sugar makes everything better, right?

THERE IS NO VANILLA OR SUGAR IN IT! **weeps** Just salt, butter, and PEPPER.

Sweet Merlin's beard no! I love me some savory sweet potatoes but no, you just, no you just don't mix white and sweet together. I can't even imagine. Every time I look at a sweet potato I'm going to think of this travesty.
@cheshire did I use your phrase in the correct context?
ETA2: I'm expanding my vocabulary in whole new ways lately.
If there is one thing I have picked up after living down south for 14 years now, it is that the only things you mix with sweet potatoes are butter, cinnamon, sugar, and maybe pecans.

Roasted sweet potatoes with pesto sauce rub is yummy. Well actually it's a mix of veggies, sweet potatoes just happened to be one of them. Do I have to turn in my southerner card? There are rumors that most of FL isn't really "south" anyways...

I roast my sweet potatoes coated in a slurry of garlic, rosemary, olive oil and salt. So good. I'll have to try pesto sometime.
But the PNW is pretty far from the South, so I think my face is safe.

This is almost as bad as the time my IL was all like, I have to go to the store to get the stuff to make the sweet potatoes.
We go to the store and they proceed to get CANNED sweet potatoes/yams, and then came home to put brown sugar and syrup all over them. Yuck, yuck.
If ever there's a time to have homemade stuff, it's TG. It must be a family thing, another IL does it, and there's is worse, because there is literally a layer of juice/grease over the sweet potatoes.
White potatoes and sweet potatoes mashed and then swirled together make a great side dish. Author: Paula Rhodes Recipe type: Side Dish Serves: 4-6 Ingredients
1½ pounds white potatoes, peeled and diced in 2-inch pieces 1½ pound sweet potatoes, peeled and diced in 2-inch pieces 4 Tablespoons butter (divided) ½ + cup warmed milk (divided) Salt Pepper (I use white pepper)
Instructions
Place white potatoes in bottom of saucepan, then sweet potatoes on top. Barely cover potatoes with water. Bring to a boil, then reduce to simmer until potatoes are fork tender but not falling apart. Drain potatoes. Remove sweet potatoes from the pan and place in another bowl. Mash white potatoes your favorite way. I normally use a masher--sometimes a portable mixer. Add 2 tablespoons (or more) butter and ⅓ cup (+ more as necessary) milk until desired consistency. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Repeat step two with sweet potatoes. Start with about 2 tablespoons of milk, adding until consistency matches white potatoes. Plop mashed sweet potatoes back into pan with mashed white potatoes and take a couple folds with a spoon to barely mix. Move to serving dish being careful not to mix too much.
