I'm going against the grain here. You aren't supposed to change them before they are ready! Changing to hoops early wouldn't have prevented her infection. I say this as someone who took the stock nose ring out the same day. I fucked up. It's not sanitary. Tell her to douse that shit with bactine over and over and over and she might save it. Or let it close. But changing to hoops wasn't going to save her.
How old is SIL? But, yeah, I've had my ears pierced about a dozen times, and I've never taken out the studs before several weeks. She probably just didn't keep them clean- I don't see how hoops would prevent an infection.
Its not even that they are infected, they aren't red or anything, it looks like they may have been infected at one point but aren't now. There is just so much gunk on the earring back itself that they can't get them apart now that it is time to change them.
I realize it is not following instructions, and I realize my suggestion wouldn't work for every single person out there, but I have had good luck doing this and when she asked for suggestions and i gave them, then she complains to me a couple weeks later because of an issue that I stopped having after changing them out early on, irritates me.
well, I mean, honestly- I would take the advice of a piercer over my DIL.
The piercer was the lady at piercing pagoda. My sister pierced ears there when she was like, 17 for a few years. If they had to have credentials on piercing that would be one thing, but at our local ones, anyway, they don't. They just hand the girls a marker and a gun and pretty much say go at it.
If she had done as suggested, the hoops would be fine.
NO NO THIS IS WRONG.
This is not following the instructions.
What instructions? From a barely trained worker from a discount tween accessory store? The original poster most likely was not suggesting a $5 pair of hoops from same store. Stud piercing causes more trauma than needed.
I missed the OP, but don't listen to the people at Piercing Pagoda. They don't know what they're doing.
Have her mom call a reputable piercing studio in her area to ask for advice. Seriously. And be careful with the Bactine. It's too harsh for some people, and can exacerbate the problem. In the meantime, sea salt soaks (or even saline solution) will help without being too irritating.
Again, call a professional piercer. If you have other questions, feel free to PM me - but I'm not a piercer, just someone with a good deal of successful piercings.
I didn't see the OP but if you are having issues with a piercing, go easy with the bactine. She should really be cleaning the piercing with antibacterial soap (dial foaming hand wash) for example. Clean the area very well with antibacterial soap and water at least twice per day. Can she go back to piercing earrings for awhile? They have a grove on the post that prevents the backing from being too close to the lobe. Those are so much easier to clean around than regular earring backings.
