Leo is on the small side--in the teen percentiles for weight and height. He's almost 16 months and can still fit into 12 mo. clothes and even some 6-12 mo.
I went crazy buying ahead during that awesome Kohl's online sale last week, but most of what I got is 2t summer stuff.
Should I return? 2t is even bigger than 24 mo., right? So if he grows like he has been, he'll be in 18-24 mo. size next fall/winter. Or is there a growth spurt somewhere in there?
I would. He sounds like DD who will be 22 months next week and is still in 12-18 months. A lot of her 18-24 month is big on her. If he's followed his curve and always been a size "behind" then return it.
DD has always been under the 10th percentile for weight and around 25th for height and she was in 2T this summer for shirts from 20-24 months. Her shorts were all 18-24 though. Buying ahead is hard!
I'm team it will fit at some point. I also don't have a problem with baggy clothes. Maybe I should? That's what happens with you have a 60 % kid followed by an 8% kid.
I'd keep. DD was always on the small size (3-5%ile for weight) and she followed the sizing guidelines. Growth spurts are real!
That being said, 2T clothes are designed to fit for an entire year, so they will fit at some point. Unless you have kids that grow super fast (this and hermione, I'm looking at your girls).
I find toddlers generally track along the same %tile on the growth charts unless there's some medical issue. So if he's 15%tile now, you can make a guess by looking ahead to what 15%tile looks like at 24-30 months. I have done this a couple times when making FG dresses for anxious brides who want them done months in advance and it's always been a real good estimate.
2T isn't just "bigger", it's cut for a mobile and thinner baby with less belly and longer limbs. Waists will generally be narrower and pant legs/sleeves will be longer. A 12 month old who wears 24 mo. could still cruising and is in the 90%tile might outweigh a 24 month old peanut who is in 2T.
After you hit 2T, they're bound to fit it seasonally sooner or later. DS was in some 18m and 2T shorts last summer (at 3) - he's around tenth percentile. I do buy ahead for him because he needs a 3T summer and winter wardrobe at this point.
