Still in my sucky job, and going back to a cluster tomorrow that should make the week...interesting. In the meantime, I applied for a remote job a couple of weeks ago. The recruiter wrote back immediately asking why I wanted to leave my current position, and DH helped me spin it in the best way possible. Radio silence since then, so I need to check in on that.
My former boss (who I freelanced for until this summer) posted on FB that they were looking for a FT, in-office, freelancer. I told him I wished he would take someone remotely. We went back and forth on FB and then I e-mailed him about it. He asked how the job was going, and I said it wasn't a good fit. He's going to chat with some folks and see if they can find me a FT remote position working for him again. Which would be AWESOME.
Even if it doesn't pan out, I'm proud of myself for being proactive and not just waiting for a better job to fall into my lap.
I'm sure your old boss wants you back--he already knows the quality of your work and you could hit the ground running. Guarantee him you'll have child care and there's not really much down side for him.
You took the words out of DH's mouth!
Childcare is guaranteed. We have an addition off the back of the house where I could work, and S wouldn't even have to know I'm home

And the boss knows this? I have to imagine they'll at least give you a shot then. Maybe you could propose to him a six-month trial period and if he feels like it's not working out at that point, you can mutually separate. That's basically what I did to make this London move happen.
I freelanced for him for 4 years. Slightly different setup, since the projects were set up as, "This is what you need to do, get it done by Thursday" and I figured out how to make it work with DD's schedule. If it is a FT gig, we'll keep the current babysitter setup and I'll just stop working and walk to the other end of the house. I have to see if he thinks it will work first. There is somewhat of a precedent, since we've had some high-level VP types who worked from home either PT or FT.
