I bought a groupon the other day for $199 for 3 rooms of interior painting. The guy who owns the business just came over and we discussed how much extra I'll be paying to paint our great room, complete with vaulted ceilings, weird cutouts above the stairs leading to the lower level (split level), and all kinds of other major PITA and difficult challenges (such as the place where the vaulted ceiling is probably at least 30 feet above the stairs).
He is charging us an additional $160, so we're getting something like 1500 square feet painted for $360 (plus paint, that wasn't included in the groupon). I can't believe what an amazing deal this is and I actually feel like this poor guy is getting ripped off because it is a big job.
He made it clear that he did this groupon to get his name out there and hopefully create future business, so I hope he does a great job and I can use him for other things in the future and recommend him so he gets some payoff for doing this work for us.
I am so, so, so excited to finally have this room painted! Our house was new construction and I'm sick of the white walls but knew we couldn't do a good job on this room doing DIY and haven't had the money to have it professionally done.
Am I crazy for feeling guilty? Other than sending future business his way, is there anything I can/should do to thank him when he's done? Do I sound crazy for wondering about that? lol.

I can understand why you would feel a little guilty, but I think this is a fair trade. He does a good job for a less money than he normally would in exchange for word-of-mouth business. As long as he does a good job, I'd get some extra business cards from him and send some referrals his way.
I don't have any other suggestions for you, but I hope your room turns out well!

I usually feel guilty about deals like this too. If he does a good job, be sure to pass his name around and leave good feedback on yelp or similar places online.
If you think he does a great job, tip him. Our painter turned our place around in 2 1/2 days last year, and I couldn't believe it. 3 stories, a little over 1600sf. Of course, I wish I got a deal like you did!

I am super jealous. I need about 600 square feet painted and would love that deal. I hope they do a good job, and you can refer them to everyone you know.
