Good Evening!
Today was going to be a pretty boring day, right up until the council started unplanned and unannounced roadworks to my cul de sac, beginning at 7 this morning! I actually had an argument with the traffic director coming home from my walk. She told me I couldn't walk up the sidewalk. When I said I lived up there, she told me I would have to cross the street and walking in the section that was being resurfaced. After trying in vain to explain to her that I'd have to cross the street again to get to my house and that I really didn't feel it the safest choice to walk in the street they were resurfacing when there was a perfectly clear and safe sidewalk a good 5 feet from the street, I gave up and took my chances.
Today I am thankful for my walks because they are really good for me, and I have come to really enjoy the time. I leave my phone at home and I'm kind of off the grid for 20-60 minutes and I really like it. And this week I have been very pleased to see the last pair of threatening magpies out with 2 babies! I thought for a while they had a dud egg, but it turns out they have two chicks. It's a silly thing to be thankful for, but I am really happy for the parent birds. And I'm thankful for my A/C, with the heatwave coming.
QOTD: I would say no, no trick-or-treating or Halloween here, but there has been a huge push of advertising this year, so I do not know what to say. I'm not turning on my porch lights. I'm actually planning a movie night with DH -- It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown and The Great Muppet Caper.
Hello! I'm having a very thankful Thursday because our director just made my part-time post permanent! I went into the meeting having no idea if I would even be coming to work on Monday, or if I would be shipped to some other department. But I'm staying put with 20 hours a week. Yahoo!
QOTD: Halloween is not big at all here, but every year I see a small handful of kids trying to trick or treat. The first year, I wasn't prepared and didn't have any candy to give, and last year no one came. So I have a small bag of candy just in case, but will most likely end up eating it myself again!
I'm thankful that I'm flying over to visit my SO next weekend. I've got so much going on here that I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed, and it will be nice to get away for a few days and have someone to tell me to just relax and everything's going to be okay.
QOTD: Halloween gets bigger and more popular here every year. There is some trick-or-treating, but it's not hugely popular, so I have no idea if I'll get any. I got trick-or-treaters once (last year, I think?) the entire time I've lived here. I guess it doesn't help that I live in limited-access apartment buildings. In case I get any in my new building, I put a Halloween sign on my door and a fake Jack-O-Lantern on the floor. Hopefully it says "Hey! Come get some candy!" I also rigged up the light from my traditional Scandinavian Christmas star to light a fake pumpkin in my window. As for plans, I'm going to a party at a friend of a friend's with a public bar party nearby as a second option.
I'm thankful that my son (18 months) seems to be doing well at nursery. He had a settling in period last week and started full time this week. He cries/whines at drop off but seems to stop once we're out of sight (I watch through a window lol). This is his first time at daycare/nursery so I'm glad.
I'm thankful that I start work next week (it's been a year!). It's in my field and is walking distance from home! Yay!
I have no idea if they ToT here. I didn't grow up in the US and haven't really gotten into Halloween myself so I don't know that I'm going to seek it out here. Once we're back in the US, we'd celebrate.
I almost posted a Debbie downer post yesterday because there is no ToTing here and I was sad for my kids' sake. But today a military mom in my kids' class invited us to ToT on base! I'm so excited. I'm trying to whip up a costume for myself in 30 min before we walk over there.
We had three sets of TOTers here tonight!!! DS1 was thrilled. This is our first year in a house so we haven't experienced this before.
There is TOTing here (UK) but it's certainly not as popular as at home (Canada). One English friend mentioned that she wouldn't do it with her kids because it felt like begging!!
DS1 TOTed at three houses on our block - of 15 or so houses they were the ones decorated - before getting very scared at a house that was decorated and very spooky. So didn't bring home the haul I was hoping to eat after he went to bed
