Or you know, I could wait three minutes and get the push notification from cnn, AP, and my Local news station. What is the point here, really?

Romney campaign releases app to to alert supporters for VP pick
By Glen Johnson, Globe Staff
The woman running Mitt Romney’s vice presidential search said today “the historic announcement is getting closer,†as the Republican’s presidential campaign committee released a new app allowing supporters to get the first official word.
“Soon everyone will know who Mitt Romney selects as his vice presidential running mate,†senior adviser Beth Myers, who has conducted the search, said in a statement. “With this new app, users can be the first to know the second member of America’s Comeback Team.â€ÂÂ
Users of the app, called “Mitt’s VP,†will receive a push notification on their phones as soon as the choice is announced. That notification, which can be received by both iPhone and Android users, will allow sharing on the supporters’ own social networks.
Romney returns to the US today after a six-day trip to England, Israel, and Poland. He has no public events tomorrow, and then is scheduled to appear on Thursday in Colorado and Friday in Nevada.
Raise Your Voice Click to contact candidates or elected officials about this issue. While both days include public appearances, they are also filled with fund-raisers, diminishing the possibility of a running mate announcement this week. Ann Romney, the candidate’s wife, is also expected to be in the United Kingdom on Thursday to watch her horse compete in the Olympic dressage competition.
It would be unusual for a candidate’s spouse not to attend the announcement of a running mate.
Mitt Romney is scheduled to return to the campaign trail on Monday, reportedly with a customized charter plane he will use for the duration of the general election campaign, as he enters the final window for announcing his selection for the vice presidential nominee.
The Republican National Convention in Tampa begins on Aug. 27, but the lingering question lately has been whether Romney - who ran the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, and has reverence for the attention they garner - would wait until the London Olympics are over to announce, or do it before they are finished so he and his running mate can split fund-raising and campaign appearances.
Meanwhile, the Romney campaign today released its first general election ad with the candidate himself speaking directly to the camera. In some of the scenes, Romney talks as he is driving an automobile, lending an air of folksiness.
In the 60-second spot, titled, “Believe in Our Future,†Romney delves into his biography as a businessman, Olympics leader, and Massachusetts governor.
“I want to use those experiences to help Americans have a better future,†he says.
The ad is being aired jointly by Romney for President and the Republican National Committee.

Did I miss how much it costs? It's actually not a bad fundraising scheme. I of course wouldn't bother, but I'm sure there are some die-hards who would pay $1.99 or $2.99 for the app.

It's free! But you do need a "my mitt" account. Or be willing to connect via fb.

I think it's a missed opportunity then. He'll be able to point to the people who sign up as support, but I kinda doubt he'll get a FB following like Obama's. (I haven't checked to see how many followers he has.) Or hey! Maybe there's no other motive than to get out the word about VP 30 seconds before the news picks up on it. What do I know?
