I also did the Kaplan. I never bought a study guide (How MM of me!). I just went to the local library and they had multiple versions of study guides to check out.
I studied quite a bit. I had to take it twice until my scores were high enough to get in where I wanted. I would say that I studied 2 hours a night for a couple of weeks. Maybe? It was a while ago.

I used the Barron's study guide because it was less expensive than Kaplan, and I thought it was a good guide. I worked my way through all of the math once and then just did a couple verbal problems, plus 2 full practice tests minus writing. I didn't study all that much because though my program is competitive, it doesn't weigh GRE scores very heavily - though I did well anyway. I found the verbal section much easier now because all vocabulary questions are given in context, so you don't have to know the exact definition of words anymore.
