pedi says 5 mos b/c younger has higher chance of food allergies. will be doing research but your thoughts? food allergies scare me. in many other ways boys seem ready -- I was also excited. but 1 mo more isn't bad either.

5 mos seems early to me. At that point your baby should still be getting all nutrients he requires from bm/formula. We started cereal at 7 mos and purees at 8 or 9 months.
Just remember to introduce one solid (puree) at a time to watch for allergic reactions. I think we gave one food for 3 days before introducing another. And we didn't give the first food during the second introduction. Like, we gave peas for 3 days then carrots for 3 days then after six days total, we gave both at the same time.
I'm not exactly sure from your post what information you're looking for so hopefully this helps a little.
In my experience, it's the late eaters who have the food allergies. Anecdotally speaking of course, mine all started solids around 5 months and eat everything without issue.
I'm looking for your thoughts on when to start solids and what you think of the theory that starting earlier can lead to food allergies.
Habs I like your thoughts. I think 5 mos is a good time -- I knew 4 was early but was hoping it'd be a fun thing and knew they wouldn't ingest it -- but I think we could probably have fun with it and not really seriously start until 5 months.
We started closer to 6 months. L had started grabbing at our food, so it seemed like she was definitely ready. I just bought a variety of foods (yep, I'm too lazy to puree my own) and tried them. I didn't do the wait 3 days or anything, but nobody in H or I's families have any major food allergies. It's worked well. She loves to eat now and she has never spit anything out.
Oh, and we've given her bits of our food as well, more and more as she's gotten teeth and started chewing. I still give her purees though, the stage 3 kind. (She's 9 months)
I waited til later, 7-ish months, to intro purees and crap, and she hated it. HAAAATED IIIIIT. I think in part her balking was due to my waiting so long. But once I started giving her people food instead of baby food she was all about it.

We started at 6 months and went straight to "real" food - no purees. He seemed to really enjoy it that way. We didn't shy away from anything, as neither H or I had any family history of food allergies.
I've seen/read what you're talking about that the longer you wait the less likely it is for food allergies to develop - I think this comes from allowing their immune systems and guts to mature more before throwing more stuff at them? But I've also heard that if you wait too long it can be counterintuitive. This is the main reason that we didn't shy away from any particular food given our family history of no food allergies; once we started, we were all in.
We waited 3 days between foods, but after we introduced one we didn't cut it out when we introduced another new one, we just kept moving forward.
I'd wait until 5-6 months and just go for it. Keep in mind the typical high-allergen foods (eggs, nuts, dairy, etc.) and just be more watchful when you introduce a food that contains those ingredients. Maybe wait a week after introducing those foods before moving on to something new, just to be sure that your boys are in the clear?
