My husband wears dress shirts everyday for work and I'm sick of paying for dry-cleaning. Is there a safe way I can wash these at home without them shrinking or fading? The tag says "dry clean only" so I'm scared to even throw one in the washer. Someone assume me that it can be done
I know I've washed my dad's and my husband's dress shirts, but I don't remember if they said dry clean only. If they are the regular 100% cotton ones, I think it's a good idea to launder them. Dry cleaning is so expensive and it deteriorates the fabric faster. Washing is also better at getting out oil and sweat.
Try washing one on a gentle cycle in cool or warm water. Hang dry or dry for a short time on permanent press setting.
If everthing works out with that one, you can do it with the others. Only very dark colors might be better to be dry cleaned so they don't fade.

It is always best to follow the care label. Laundering a shirt that should otherwise be dry-cleaned can cause fading and shrinkage. I'd advise, testing an older shirt in any "at-home dry-clean" process before utiliizing this method for all. Money saved on dry-cleaning could end up invested in a new shirt wardrobe! Good Luck.
