I am fully against it. Always
I have gotten a lot of shit from people for this.
I have even been told that because I am anti- DP I "like" or "condone" events like the CO shooting.
IMO- our justice system has too many flaws to be able to ensure we are *only* executing people who are 100% guilty and I cannot accept ever being okay with an innocent person being killed.

My experience with being given shit was limited to a group of people in a tiny and very redneck, gun-toting, foreigner-hating, nobody made it past the 10th grade town I lived in a for a couple of years when I was a ski-town bum.
I was so shocked that anyone would believe you are either 100% for the DP or you are 100% on the side of criminals!
You get a lot of crap for it? That surprises me since CT is a pretty liberal state. I've had discussions about it with a lot of people and probably 75% of the people I've spoken with about it are against it and the rest weren't jerks to people who were for it.

I only moved to CT last Fall and obviously it's much different here.

Before that I lived in Colorado for 12 years.
Ah ok. Well hopefully you have better luck here in CT. I've found most people to be fairly open minded, though of course not everyone is like that.
I'm for it but I think it's weird that OP has been flamed before. I'm from Texas and I've never heard a single argument about people supporting the death penalty or not. I've only ever heard, on a case-by-case basis, whether you think this person should get the DP. Even that has never gotten heated.

It's interesting that you get shit for supporting the CO shooting then. Did you call some of your old friends up last week to remind them that you don't support the death penalty?
people really give you shit for being against the death penalty? perhaps i hang out with a bunch of enlightened awesome types, but while i'eve heard peopel discuss these topics at great length and with passion, i've never heard people giving each other shit over it.
Personally against, although professionally may have to enforce. Which I think is a slim possibility I'll ever have a DP case.
I don't understand how lawyers can do this.
Not trying to be a bitch but I really have a hard time understanding how you could enforce it if you don't believe in it.
I don't care how much money I would be getting paid, I couldn't risk someones life just do do my job.
It especially bothers me when it comes out after the fact that innocent people were sentenced to DP because DA's hid evidence or continued pushing for a DP conviction regardless of witnesses recanting or new evidence just so they can preserve their "wins".

I think you have to call them up and yell this:
"I'M AGAINST THE DEATH PENALTY, YOU CONSERVATIVE MURDERING ANUS, DO YOU WANT TO GIVE ME SHIT ABOUT IT???!!!"

I imagine NEW sitting at home, staring out into space, wondering what she can talk about on here that is going to have everyone agree with her so she can FINALLY secure her place with the "in" crowd.
I imagine it going something like, "oh! I can talk about the DP! I can mention how AGAINST it I am, and I know a lot of other people on the board are, too. Then! They'll finally accept me into their bosom of friendship and warm thoughts! Especially since my weird hatred of the janitor guy didn't play out how I expected..."
I have mixed feelings about it. I think my preferred punishment for the really bad crimes is 24/7 solitary confinement--no books, magazines, tv, cell mates, etc.
I think most people think the media shows all the really terrible crimes all the time--not true. I'm super interested in crime patterns, profiling, etc. and in my research...there are just some realy unspeakable crimes that I think even the media doesn't highlight.
The one that always sways me back to the death penalty...see if I can remember the facts...I think his name was Kirby Anthony in Alaska, this woman was letting her husband's nephew stay with her husband, her and her two daughters (ages 8 and 3). He was super shady and I think did something that upset her so she kicked him out (fuzzy on the details). He later broke into her place when the husband was out of town and raped her and her daughters and brutally murdered them. Reading on all the details, its just so sick, so evil.
Cases like that give me pause--and there's many of them. Go to John Douglas's "mind hunter" website, click on the research center, and just go through the books (it lists the killers/victims/crimes from the books), particularly Journey into Darkness. The murder of 11 year old Alison Parrott, the evil that is Paul Kenneth Bernado as well as Gary Heidnik. Looking at these crimes/evil people, sometimes I just think some people don't deserve to live, even miserable lives in prison.
I also pause, as some have mentioned, because there are mistakes, and innocent people are put to death which is horrible. Which is why I think 24/7 solitary confinement would make an okay substitute.
Please to be telling me what ski town in CO you lived in that is full of "redneck, gun-toting, didn't finish 10th grade" types? Admittedly, CO is sort of a "purple" state, but most ski towns are more blue.

Ever since I was a little girl I have dreamed of prosecuting for the state just so that I could be rich, hide evidence and send innocent people to death row! Thank God my dream has come true! $150,000 in student loans? Risk of losing my license and being sued for malpractice? BRING IT ON. Us prosecutors, we are greedy, money thirsty people man. We don't give a damn about the public. Those stories you hear on the news? We are all like that! We live for hiding evidence and cannot wait for a death penalty case so we can prosecute the wrong guy and let killers roam the streets! It's all about the money baby!
It doesn't surprise me that you don't understand, but this is my attempt to explain: I chose to prosecute because I see it as a way to help people. Technically our job is to represent the will of the community. The DP is still legal and there are times when the majority of the community wants it. I understand that. I don't agree with all the laws all the time, nobody does. But if I wasn't willing to suck it up and do my best most of the time I wouldn't get to help anybody ever. I will probably never have to handle a DP case, but I probably will handle a hundred or so child sex abuse cases during my career and that's a trade off I'm good with. The possibility of having to ask for the DP v. convicting child sex abusers.
I feel like I say this on a daily basis but today I will say it again: You have literally no self awareness when it comes to what you share or post on this forum. You remind me of that baby goat is a dick video from this morning. You keep bouncing off the other baby goats who are eating grass and have no awareness that people on the interwebs are all pointing and laughing.
