I think saying "this is not the place" is perfect. My paternal grandmother was a horrible person as well, which made attending her funeral difficult since I wasn't sad at all. In my case everyone knew she was awful and nobody was terribly sad over her loss, so there was no hard time or guilt over it.
I would not engage, saying "this is not the place" could come across as argumentative. I would just say " I'm comfortable with my decision " or " I wish we would have been closer" sounds better.

I think "this is not the place" is a perfectly acceptable response. I really hope they won't say anything at all bc there is no point in stirring up crap at a funeral!
