So I'm ever so slightly starting to research what is needed to open my own daycare. And by "ever so slightly" I mean I've started a business plan and budget. Oh and I've spent way too much time looking at commercial property online. Read the 2011 area daycare feasibility study. And I've set up an appointment with the local childcare council. And I might have left a message with the state licensing department about meeting with them.
I could do this right? I have a degree in psychology which included a lot of child development courses. And when I worked in a pre-school (just out of college) I took a bunch of junior college classes for ECE credits. The territory I'm getting into isn't completely unfamiliar. Plus I've already decided I would hire an education director who could focus more on the curriculum while I focused more on the culture and the business.
It's probably a long shot but K said she would back me in this. And I want out of this job pretty badly. In reality this will come down to finances. I honestly don't know how easily I can get a business loan or other sources of funding.
At the very least it will be a fun project to daydream about until reality hits
Why is this crazy? You have a plan, you have support from your partner, you see a need in the market and have the skills to match it. You even have a plan to get in support for an area you feel might need more qualifications than your own.
I see no reason why this is crazy. I do think you will need to ask for a Small Business Loan probably. Try the government website. You might qualify.
In fact,if you want try it out without a huge expense ,you could do an in -home daycare just to get your feet wet. We were encouraged to do it by our licensing worker but have been too chicken to look into it.

I'm excited for you!
We thought about that for all of about 30 secs. 1) I would be limited to 6 kids (one of which would be JB) so really I'd bring in $1000 or less a week and that isn't going to cut it considering all of my expenses would increase (insurance, food, etc) 2) I don't want to work and live in the same place. Being a SAHM is one thing because you can go out and about and do different activities during the day but I don't want to work 10 hours at home and then live at home.
