My sweet GSP mix Scout has been on TOTW Wetlands since we adopted him a little over a year ago. About a month ago, he started vomiting a couple hours after every meal. We had recently started a new bag, but I didn't really think anything of it since he had been on it so long. Anyhow, after several trips to the vet and starting him on Benadryl & Tagamet, he seems to be doing okay. They had X-rayed his stomach and didn't see any obstructions. They thought it was stress related but that didn't make sense to me. I was feeding him plain chicken & white rice. Once I slowly started incorporating the TOTW back into his diet, he had been throwing up again, with amounts in direct correlation to the amount of dog food. Does anyone now if their formula changed? If we switch to a new dog food, do you have any recommendations? I am thinking Orijen might be my next choice. I have been scouring the internet and am getting overwhelmed by the choices. Help, please?
I recommend Wellness Core, a high-quality grain free dog food. It's available at any pet supply store and online. The protein sources in the original formula are turkey and chicken. This brand hasn't had any recalls lately and is not processed in the same facilities as TotW.
It could be the food, but he may have developed an allergy to something specific in the food. I'm not a vet, but here's what we just went through with our GSD this year...
We have had him since he was 1 YO and fed him the same food (Diamond Natural) for the past 5 years. Never had an issue. Then at the beginning of this year, he started getting an upset stomach/vomiting/diarrhea. At first I thought it was just bones or his sensitive GSD stomach. But it got worse and he would turn his nose up to food and his stomach would make loud gurgling noises. I could tell he felt crappy.
The vet tested bloodwork, xrays, etc. Found nothing of concern. He mentioned a possible meat protein allergy (I forget how he got to that diagnosis) and we tried eliminating meat protein. Poncho got better within a few days. Vet says he might be able to tolerate meat proteins he hasn't been introduced at some point, but every time we try to add it back in within 24 hours he's back to turning his nose up to food and vomiting. We've tried multiple brands of food, but it looks like we'll be sticking with the no-meat protein one for now because he feels good again.
Just thought I'd throw that out as an option. I hope you figure out your pups issue soon!
