hey Boston ladies! lurker here with a quick question.
DH and I are house hunting on the South Shore and I'm wondering if any of you have any comments/experiences/thoughts about Scituate. (or Norwell or Duxbury for that matter)
we know the commute is rough from the SS, but our mindset is that we currently commute about an hour and fifteen minutes door-to-door from the Mansfield area, without the lifestyle benefits of the SS, so it'd be an upgrade overall.
Where do you guys commute to? I don't know much about the SS, but my H used to live in Weymouth and the commute up Route 3 into the Boston area was horrible. But it depends where you are going. Commute is a big factor for me, I hate traffic with the fire of a thousand suns. But living close to the water would be amazing!

thanks for any insights!
I'm from Duxbury and it's a lovely place to live, but a bitch of a commute to Boston, because there's no commuter rail. Scituate is also nice and does have a rail but it's not convent on/off to any major highways which I think could be kind of annoying on weekends. I think Norwell is a good compromise between the 3 places but really I would love to live in any of those towns.

I work in Cambridge, DH works near North Station. I think if we ended up in Scituate we'd take the train in. That's how we commute now, bc I agree with you. Traffic is the worst.
We actually did a trial week in Dux over the summer and surprisingly the commute wasn't too bad. Actually, it was the same door-to-door for me, but I have the benefit of working flex hours (7-3) which saves some of the headaches.
Also, regardless of the town, we wouldn't drive all the way in. We'd probably get on the red line in Braintree and avoid the worst of the traffic.
@lorelaireadsagain I agree with you about the benefits of Norwell. it seems like a great balance of all those factors. but it seems like the hardest town to get into price wise. (?) well, if you'd prefer not to live right on a main road.
and we're converned about the isolation issue of Scituate too, but sometimes I wonder...if I actually manage to move to a lovely coastal town, how much am I going to want to leave on the weekend anyway??
thanks for your thoughts! def helps me mull things over.

I love Scituate and grew up the next town over. I would move there in a heart beat if I could afford it. Working 7- 3 may not be too bad for a Boston commute. Everyone I know who lives there happens to work hours like that, or overnights.
